Even when they fit your definition for being heroes? They were willing to give their lives to save other Marines what would be the greater good.

Saving soldiers that would kill the soldiers of the opposite faction.

Even if that were the case, so what? Or is the "greater good" you speak of supposed to be an absolute, objective, truth that applies to everyone equally?

Yes, and that is the case with heroic fantasies. Everyone seems to agree on the good, even the villians.

Out of curiosity, what is your definition of "hero"?

he·ro: noun \\ˈhir-(ˌ)ō\\: a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities

I think that the scope of the game and info released alread looks pretty epic. Some greater force is manipulating events and factions to ensure the greatest possible chaos. It's not just the warden vs. the blight or Hawke trying to save Kirkwall from being destroyed in the mage/templar conflict. It's the darkspawn, who aren't gone yet, the chantry in shambles with even the groups themselves in conflict, trouble with the Qunari, trouble with the Grey Wardens, an Orlesian civil war AND a demonic invasion. I don't think we're going to see a whole lot of the personal type of quest we saw in DA2.

What we have here is Thedas, an allegory of medieval europe that does its job so well it has become one of the very few "fresh" fantasy settings of this decade, as anyone who is into literature can rightfully point out.

Dragon Age wasn't even a fresh fantasy setting when it came out last decade.

I'm trying to think of 'fresh' fantasy settings. There's Shadowbridge, a fantasy world which is a maze of bridges that cross the ocean with no known end and each span has its own unique culture and denizens.

There's Palimpsest, which is a sapient living city that acts as an STD - you travel to it by having sex with someone who has a piece of the city tattooed on their skin, afterwards, the piece you visited appears on your skin.

I mean, Avatar: The Last Airbender has a fresher setting than DA because DA is pseudo-mideveal Europe with elves, dwarves, and mages.

You want a game with a fresh fantasy setting? Morrowind. The Void.

All right, answering your point throughout this topic, let me break something down for you. It will most likely sound offensive, and for that I apologize in advance, but there is only so much ridicule I can stand.

Semantic debates are stupid.

So heroes don't exist because not everyone thinks their heroes? Then thieves don't exist, because not everyone will agree someone's a thief. The same goes for murderers, rapists, dictators. The same goes, shifting to less ominous examples, for beatiful or smart or talented or funny or kind or cruel or [insert any and every subjective quality you can think of here] people. Good food, good dreams, good stories don't exist, just becasue you won't be able to convince everyone in existence that they are, in fact, good.

My poin is, by using your "logic", you can classify every abstract term ever as non existent. But the thing is they do exist - in the human psyche, which is the only place we care about when using those terms, because that's what they were made for. Sure, you could make a case for them empirically being simply human constructs, and I would very much agree, but if you take the position that they don't exist, not even subjectively, language loses its purpose and you could as well be a caveman counting his opposable thumbs.

Short version being, with all due respect, that your argument is rather dumb.

@Gwydden

It's a little hard to explain a point to people that don't use level filters.

It's like I said, heroes are every persons subjective interpretation. You can't compare that to thieves, murderers, rapists etc, because those things are not subjective - there is a set action. For example a thief: taking something that doesn't belong to you. If I go to a deeper level past the filter, one could argue that nothing belongs to anyone universally, but I won't go there. And if we won't go there, stealing is not subjective, it is clear cut. With being a hero you don't even have to go deep to see that it is subjective. Being hero is not an action, it is an ideal.

What do you have to do to be a thief? Steal.
What do you have to do to be a hero? Well.. depends. Might even have to steal, like Robin Good.

@KainD:
Thievery can be very subjective, because possession is also an abstract concept. What I mean is, yes, heroism is a made up idea, and as such it is subjective, but if you state it has no application then it has no value and, why does it exist in the first place?

Hero is just that - a word. It is meant to be used.

Also, this is about storytelling. I'd say that, in this context, the relevant meaning of heroism is its literary one. That is, the Hero's Journey, which is a very specific storytelling build.
