Hey all,
So I am playing Awakening for the first time, somehow I never got around to playing it before but I recently purchased the Ultimate edition from Steam as DA:O remains one of my favorite games of all time, and it was too good to pass up.
Anyway, I am wondering for two points specifically what you thought was the better decisions. Firstly, with the rioters. How did you handle that, and what do you think about the consequences? Secondly, the final battle where you are forced to save Amaranthine or Vigil's Keep? What do you see as the better choice? Both have their benefits...as my canon Cousland warrior, he is the typical "good guy" and never wants to see civilians die, so saving the city seems the more moral option. It also helps to keep Amaranthine/Ferelden in a better scenario following the Darkspawn incursion and the rebuilding efforts are faster since the critical infrastructure remains in place. On the other hand, my Cousland warrior has also long accepted that his days of being a nobility of Ferelden are over, and he is a Grey Warden above all else. Strictly speaking from a Warden perspective, Vigil's Keep is the more strategic choice as it strengthens the position of Grey Wardens in the region, as well as helps to train new Wardens, as many flock there to train following the battle.
Anyway...what are your thoughts? I'm really into lore/story/roleplaying so its always good to hear other opinions!
Which is the better decision....*Awakening end spoilers*

If the Keep is fully upgraded then it's better to save Amaranthine because the Keep can defend itself to an extent. But there's three companions who will die anyway in the epilogue if left at the keep (But I won't spoil unless you ask). Nathaniel won't in the epilogue but there's a glitch when importing to DA2 where he's marked dead if he isn't brought with you so it's best to bring him if you plan to import to DA2.
If the Keep isn't fully upgraded then all your companions will die in the epilogue if left there undefended. >.< (and you can only bring however many can fit in a party; three). If you don't defend Amaranthine then it's burned to the ground and the survivors hate you.
The rioters Idk. I said something wrong and they got mad and attacked me so I killed em all. >.<

I usually give the rioters one chance to walk away, which they don't take, and then I slay them. I'm the Arl of Amaranthine, for Andraste's sake, and I haven't had too many compunctions about passing judgment on peers and peasants alike in my seneschal's court, so why should I stand around in my own courtyard and listen to a bunch of pitchfork-toting yokels tell me what's up? I'm a Cousland, I get noblesse oblige. Too bad they didn't get lese majeste.
I save the Keep. Seems to me I've met nothing but opposition in Amaranthine, once a stronghold of the Howe's, let's recall. The bann rouses the rabble against me, various shadowy enemies conspire against my life, the guards look at me cross-eyed while I'm cleaning up their messes in the streets, and I can't find a decent mocha latte anywhere. Besides, the Keep will be able to subdue and control the countryside while the city is rebuilding, but the city, we have already seen, cannot protect either the Keep or itself in the event of future depredations. No, Amaranthine must burn, and Cousburg rise from the ashes.
