I doubt there´s any Cold War confrontation where any side had a moral upper hand.
Anyway, I read that he was arrested for some time because of inventing the AK, as the higher-ups wouldn´t believe it was his creation (or something in that line).

95% of it was just a redone STG-44 for most of the initial prototype runs.
As a side note, the 47 series was just the prototype runs that never saw actual battle, what most people see used in combat is either the chinese type 56 or the AKM varients that flooded europe in the mid 70s and 80s.
