OK so I recently got to the scene on Mars when Shepard talks to TIM, and the line she uses when he says she's being hasty because of the Collector base's destruction, the line used in response is "That place was an abomination; hundreds of thousands of humans were murdered there." I never really cared much for this line, partly because I'm not fond of the use of abomination, and avoided any dialogue that included it in Mass Effect 2.

My question is, how do I get the alternate line where Shepard says that TIM couldn't be trusted with it? Is it determined by the paragon/renegade system, or is there something else that triggers it?

I utterly hated that line completely, but I also didn't like the line where I have to be so dismissive of TIM. I didn't trust TIM with the base, but it was less of personal distrust of him or Cerberus (I would give Cerberus the technology in a heartbeat if it meant keeping it out of alliance or Council hands) so much as it was the opinion that the technology was too dangerous to be used and that humanity didn't have the wisdom to really understand or utilize the technology in an effective manner.

I'd have preferred an option of destroying the base out of sheer practical utilitarianism, and being able to defend as such.

I have had both responses and I'm sure you have to use the investigate dialogue and use the renegade option when that line pop's up.

I used the investigate option on the dialogue wheel, and this line is automatic. I don't get an option again until the charm or intimidate options are available.

I'm sorry. I gave misinformation. I just watched the video and  if you save the collector base that is where you get the line.

Detroying the base gives the abomination line

I think it must have something to do with the convo you have on the Collector base. I have gotten both lines and I can't figure out why I get one or the other. Could it have anything to do with the Council's survival? Or your Spectre status? Wish I knew because I hate the "abomination" line.

Yeah I suspect that it has something to do with what I do throughout ME2, not just the final scene. I always chose the harshest dialogue with TIM and picked any option that took something away from Cerberus, like Overlord, uploading intel, etc. so that could have something to do with it.

You get that line if you destroyed the base, and defended the decision with the Paragon option in the debrief w/ TIM.

If you destroy it and defend your choice w/ Renegade, Shepard cites distrust towards TIM as the reason.

So in this case, either (A) your game glitched; or (B) you remember your previous decision wrongly.

I believe it has to do with the debrief after the suicide run with TIM. Destroy -> "dont lecture me" I think is what gives you that line instead. Shepard will say something about knowing what kind of person he (TIM) was all along and knew what the cost of dealing with him would be.

I used the line where Shepard says "Sorry I'm getting a lot of bullsh*t on this line". I did do the option where Shepard tells Joker to "lose this channel". I guess I'll find out if I remember correctly or not. Thanks for the tip.

It's this abomination nonsense that pushes me towards keeping the base. I don't know why BioWare thought that people's reason for destroying the base was because of some ridiculous sense of "this place is tainted".

And what really drives me nuts is that Legion and Mordin offer the most compelling arguments for keeping the base, and then they complain about it afterward.

Yeah I wish that lacking trust in Cerberus was put at the front of Shepard's reasoning in ME2. You get some of that when Shep says "human dominance, or just Cerberus?" but I had to avoid anything regarding how it's tainted and especially that line about the "soul of our species". I'm very thankful I can skirt around them, but for pure paragons it sure does come out of nowhere.

Yeah, I think on my current run I am just going to hand the base over to TIM and be done with it. So what if the crew doesn't like it. (Actually, my biggest reason for destroying it is usually because I have an unhealthy desire for the approval of fictional characters. :crying:)

Even if you hand the base to TIM you get bad lines. You don't get a chance to talk to The Illusive Man in a reasonable manner after the Suicide Mission. Shepard get her panties in a bunch and goes all "my way or the highway." In ME3 you have no opportunity to work with TIM anyway. Remember, this is Mass Effect where you choices matter.

My rationale for blowing up the base is the enjoyment of watching big explosions.

Red or green, not much diff really, though the red one is a tad more satisfying.

Thanks for reminding me of another line I hate :( Yay, I can be pro-Cerberus or pro-Terra Firma.

The Predators think of the Predalien as an abomination, too.

Another confusing issue is that the game can't decide what keeping the base means. Are you keeping it to study it, or use it? And by use it, I mean actually build a freaking Reaper?

Here are the arguments from the characters: www.youtube.com/watch

Unfortunately this isn't SWKotoR, you can't switch sides mid-game. Which building a Reaper would pretty much be (though I'm sure they could space magic a way up to control it).

I hate how Cerberus still manages to salvage from the base if its destroyed...

It's interesting just how many hate the line. It hit home for me, personally. That's exactly how I saw it when I first played, and still do.

Well really the choice should not have existed so that the plot could move forward while making it more significant regardless of high/low EMS.

I'll agree there. That would've been really cool. Both the Council and Collector Base get so much attention, but they amount to little more than fluff. I wonder if ME3's ending will fare the same. I think Wrex dying or not still stands as the most impactful choice we've made.

As I said, my belief for destroying the base is that it is inherently uncontrollable, and too much of a danger via indoctrination to keep.

I trust Cerberus more than I trust anybody else with the base, but I don't think they can control it. I don't buy any of that 'abomination' crap.

Anybody who believes any of that stuff deserves to fail hard and miserably in my opinion.
