Welcome to another round of "Damned if you do. Damned if you don't."

Spare the queen:
Turian councilor: How could you let it live? Do you know how many people died in the Rachni War?

Save the queen:
Turian councilor: Do you enjoy committing genocide?
(Best renegade response in ME1: "Sometimes, TURIAN.")

Eclipse Merc in Dantius Towers let go:
Garrus: "Anybody else would have killed him."

Eclipse Merc in Dantius Towers pushed out the window:
Garrus: "That was a little extreme."

Garrus always used: "Harsh, but I guess he had it coming." with me. That might have to do with the way I "brought him up" using the more renegade approach in ME1. "That's how it's supposed to feel, Garrus. Remember that."

Garrus rationalizes extreme violence like that elsewhere. Shoot the pyjaks on Eletania. "Guess the little beast had it coming.."

He's always been a little Renegade, whether you encourage him or not. That was kind of apparent when you first meet him at Dr Michel's office. Shoot first, even when there's a hostage situation.

Yeah, Garrus is a violent guy I guess. He does have a bit of an edge. No, no. He's got an edge. I like it when he starts beating harkin too, then caps sidonis and is like in such a nonchalant way "debt repaid sidonis". Then you take him back to the citadel docking area and edi's like "C-sec has no leads on the death of sidonis". Garrus is like "What a shame" in a really dark voice.

I was repulsed by the Collectors when they turned Lilith(or Kelly) to goo but that just made me more determined to beat them. My main reason for not wanting to preserve the Collector Base for study or anything else was that it would be dangerous and incredibly foolish to do so. Still fresh in my mind was the mission to the "Dead" Reaper which was apparently still able to indoctrinate or be used as an antennae by other Reapers to indoctrinate people. There was no reason to think matters would be any different if people spent any amount of time on the Collector Base. I would have appreciated being able to cite this as my reason for destroying it.

I was rather annoyed that the bomb we planted was apparently not sufficient to eradicate it completely and that Cerberus managed to salvage something from the wreck but felt vindicated in my decision because Cerberus as a whole had fallen victim to indoctrination and this seemed at least partly due to the Reaper tech they kept salvaging and trying to use. My concern at using bits of old Reaper was at least acknowledged in Leviathan, where Shepard expresses concern in Bryson's lab that old bits of Sovereign have been properly shielded.

Its only "extreme" because you sent him out, Garrus figured a quick bullet to the head would be more merciful...

As Shepard, you should put your hand on his shoulder, and ask; "Do you feel like your in charge?"

You're a Spectre. The council doesn't want you to call them in the first place. That's why they gave you the job.. so they can hide from tough decisions and not have to listen to you. Embrace the title and kill with impunity or create your own "merciful" solutions at will. Very few games legally endorse you to become an ubermensch. Have fun while you can. :)

In ME1 they constantly debrief you, in ME3 they also constantly contact you so I think you might have gotten part of the job description wrong. They just don't want to have to defend the tough decisions by having you do them in secret and redirect all responsibility to you.

OK so I recently got to the scene on Mars when Shepard talks to TIM, and the line she uses when he says she's being hasty because of the Collector base's destruction, the line used in response is "That place was an abomination; hundreds of thousands of humans were murdered there." I never really cared much for this line, partly because I'm not fond of the use of abomination, and avoided any dialogue that included it in Mass Effect 2.

My question is, how do I get the alternate line where Shepard says that TIM couldn't be trusted with it? Is it determined by the paragon/renegade system, or is there something else that triggers it?

After you destroy the Collector Base in ME2, choose the renegade dialogues where Shepard says smartass things to TIM like: "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble hearing you; I'm getting a lot of bull*** on this line." and "I know what you are, and the price of dealing with you."

They don't constantly debrief you. Joker asks each time after a mission if you want to contact them. No one's twisting your arm, until after the final mission and you're recalled to the Citadel and they take the ship away.

As for ME3, it's just paced to be more "cinematic" in general. I don't think it has much to do with the Spectre job description so much as it does with how the developers wanted to present the story this time. Roleplaying wise, you're still free to play Shepard as dismissive (you can tell Hackett.. "I'm done with the Council. They've been a pain in the ass.").
