It's sorted now. The ****ing charms bar still pisses me off occasionally but beyond that everything else is fine.
So I've got a windows 8 laptop. How do I make it less awful?

Try using some of the new stuff like Bing News, or the Facebook app.
In addition, once you find applications you use a lot on the "desktop", try pinning them to the start menu for easy more Windows7-like access.
I like Windows 8 as a device OS, not as much for desktop, but it's usable.
