After beating the game, i was left with big "meh.....".

I noticed how most of the quests, both side and main, took inside a city, and there weren't as many areas to explore. I guess da2 makes it up for day/night system. The quests are way too short. Main questline, even if with the legacy dlc, is not long as main questline in DAO. I also did not feel the "epicness" i felt in DAO. Probably because of the short quests and limited areas.

The romance system seemed really buggy. Seriously, i had to load old saves about 10 times until i figured out i could use debug command to complete romance with Merrill.

But i think my biggest disappointment is the final battle. I think i would have been better if you fought Orsino if you sided with templar, and Meredith if you sided with the mages, and Orsino or Meredith can sacrafice themselves to help me kill the other. But no, i have to fight meredith either way.

I aslo failed to see the point of import save. Sure there are some returning companions such as Zervan, Alistar, and Anders, but you never get to meet the Grey Warden himself who defeated Archdemon.

The red lyrium made Merdith insane and unstable, so you have to fight her regardless.

Supposedly hawke and the grey warden will be in DAI in some capacity.

The game played like a tragedy.Nothing you did ultimately made any difference.
I found that unsatisfying.:?

I agree. After playing DAO i was expecting a really great sequel. But DA2 made me wonder if it was even made by same crew

How would meeting the Hero of Ferelden even work? You could approximate the face, but unlike DA2, in DAO there is no voice and no accumulated personality (helpful, funny, angry). So you'd see someone that maybe looks like the Warden, and then they'd start talking in a voice you never heard, saying something that, more likely than not, you would not have said. Hawke could be done in DAI, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. Too many downsides.

The import does determine whether you get certain side quests. It also provides background. For example, if the Hero was a mage there's a line or two of dialogue about that. If you're also a mage, another line. Seeing as how the story of Hawke in Kirkwall is separate and not simply "more Warden" the effect (or lack thereof) of the import seems reasonable.

Yea, no, not a single feature surpassed origins. I'm including graphics on that list.

Anyone thinking daII was better lacked the mental capacity to handle da:o. That's exactly why daII was dumbed down: most people were too ****ing dumb for the game. So bioware simplified it, hoping to make more money.

lol. Well, I enjoyed both. There were things about DA2 I thought were better done, others that were better handled in Origins. And the whole "Fight two bosses at the end" was perhaps (for me) the most idiotic aspect of the game, but overall I enjoyed it.

Plus, it had Varric, who was totally awesome, and I pray isn't completely personality morphed for Inquisition.

I'll admit, I came very close to responding to that.  Not as, um... passionately as Rotward, though.  :P

If I were to fault any three things in this game it would be the following:

No Mage Specific Content.

I never feel the pressure of the templars when I am a mage myself. They seem to be hunting all other apostate mages which I end up helping out a lot, but they never bother me. I am an apostate mage living in a city where the fear of mages is on the verge of hysterical paranoia and no one ever raises on eyebrow. It makes no sense.

Bad Combat

Basically the combat being sped up is not a problem here, it easy to adopt to. However, the AI is poor and there is generally no need for tactics. They just come after you in waves and drop down from the sky (or rise up from the ground if they are spirits) until they are all dead. Every fight is the same, every enemy the same, no special tactics needed like taking on a Broodmother or Arch Demon in Origins.

Low Quality Textures.

The graphics in DA2 are better than DAO, there is no question about that. However they are also worse. The character models used are very pretty, the characters look more human and realistic. Unfortunately there is almost no detail. The skin tone is bland compared to Origins, the wood paneling in The Hanged Man is a joke, and for seem reason, the same wood paneling is used in a dank passage under the docks. In Origins the woodwork had textures and nuances that made it look real. The woodwork in DA2 is like a 5 year old child's finger painting in comparison.

I do not know how better to put my feelings about the graphics. Character models are much, much nicer, but there is almost no detail to them, or anything else in the game. Of course the elves looked better in Origins, in DA2 they made them so thin boned that I had hard time believing they had enough enough muscle mass to stand up.

That is my viewpoint anyways. We could also go on and on about the dumbed down crafting system and the lack of armor for companions, but then we might never stop.

This forum's not as busy now that inquisition forum has picked up speed. Unfortunately, DAII topics are just being posted there, :pinched:

Looking at game again after deleting everything bioware related after Mass Effect 3, DA 2 in retrospect is not a great game, but it's still okay. Was it a let down? Sure. But, it has some redeeming qualities in the end. If they hadn't tried to reboot the series in terms of mood and gameplay, I think the game would have probably done much better. As it stands, it's unfortunate it has the Dragon Age name on it because otherwise, the comparison wouldn't have been there. On the plus side they at least learned from it sort of and didn't give us one background and 1 city again fro DA 3. Just hope the guy responsible for DA 2 that basically responded to critics by telling them they were too stupid to get the game isn't going to do the same thing again.

Overall I think the game is a bit underrated. On the technical side, there's so many things wrong, like the reused environments and lack of any proper exploration, but overall I don't think it's anywhere near as poorly written or executed as some on these forums would make it out to be. I'm sure I'd be in the minority about this, but overall I think that despite its story being independent of DA:O, it actually handles itself as a sequel better than Mass Effect 2 did.

And you don't need Steam.
