Mark my words: When hard copies become entirely obsolete, the game industry WILL crash.

Casual games will become the norm because they are easily distributed, far less labor intensive to make, portable, short, and shallow. AAA Hardcore games will go extinct. That business model won't remain profitable in the wake of the casual trend.

A physical copy of the game is an powerful distinction. It's a present. A treat. A tangible goal to work towards. A digital download doesn't command such forethought. Currently, AAA titles depend on that anticipation.

And we are all running full speed ahead right at that wall. Consumers for the sake of convenience. Publishers to cut costs.

Even if these objections were true, they're only temporary. It's only a matter of time before the vast majority of the industrialized world has easy access to internet with bandwidth on the level of Google Fiber or something like that. (Which is about 1 Gigabyte every 10 seconds.) Likely less than a decade.

Shouldn't this thread be in the off-topic section? Digital vs physical distribution in general?

We're talking about something under a year from now, not in ten years.

Yes. Which I why I said even if they were true, they would only be temporary. As in, they would hypothetically be a problem in one year but not in ten years.

I understand that. My point is that the game in question (DA:I) will be released in under a year, so your entire argument is irrelevant.

We're talking about the future of an industry, not a single game.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer hard copies to digital downloads. Besides not everyone has a good enough connection to download games from Origin/Steam whatever.

did you not read my post even if you do get disk  you still need to down load a patch for them to work

i use Xbox. I will ways prefer consoles to CPUs

along with that, I almost always but the physical copy. Especially for sharing with friends or eventually selling if I want.

It's also only a matter of time before we completey shift away from fossil fuels and adopt a new form of energy, be it nuclear, renewable, hydrogen, or any number of possibly yet undiscovered sources of energy.

Doesn't mean you set fire to all the refinaries and declare no more fossil fuels for anyone, ready or not.

Nobody is doing that right now.

But they will.

Why would anyone set a refinary full of flamable stuffs on fire? What sense does that even make?

And I hope you realize you're talking about decades in the future, possibly not even in either of our life times right? What point is there in supporting the notion that it should go away now rather then simply understanding, like everyone else, that it will on its own eventually. And not make a total jackass out of yourself by taking an accelerantist stance?

Because David has to be contrary about something all the time or else he'll starve.

He's like a vampire or a particularly stubborn conflict succubus.

I suspect we'll have one more generation of consoles that will use discs after the Xbox One and PS4. And that will be the end of it. And even then, there's a good chance they'll be a legacy feature.

So no, not decades. Perhaps even less than a single decade. A decade ago I was still using 3 1/2'' floppy discs.

If they stop using discs then they'll distibute games on flash drives or something, hard copy distribution will never die while the allure of owning a physical object exists

This. The package may change, but the desire never will fade.

The only Internet services where I live charge outrageous overages if you exceed your bandwidth so no, I would not like to have digital download only.

There were CD's a decade ago david, and there were still floppy discs available for some time. Just like how there were VCR tapes long into the lifespan of the DVD's reign. Digital only media may be popular now, but acting as if disks are going to go away, when digital downloads are basically still in their infancy stage right now in terms of development, is foolish.

I suspect a good 20 to 28 years before the disk finally is completely phased out, and that is basically because everyone without good internet is basically discounted from the equation in favor of "modernizing" everything, leaving a large portion of multiple populaces to be without ways of playing these games with the industry and its supports basically going "lol, don't care" to their complaints and plight.

Honestly, it sounds like you're championing the position another person in the field did a year back, fella by the name of Adam Orth. You should look him up, you guys both seem to have the same...charm in dealing with dissenters.
