Despite all this, my core group is always Warden, Morrigan, Leliana and Alistair. There seems to be a great symbiosis between the four. Each fills a niche and has abilities that compliment the others.
Leli provides stealth recon, trap disablement, and lockpicking, together with ranged damage-dealing, and an extra 'companion' in the form of her ranger pets.
Morrigan provides utility, healing, crowd control, weapon buffs and the ability to quickly neutralise, or destroy enemy Mages with Mana Clash and Crushing Prison.
Alistair is a very effective tank, though it takes a few levels for him to get to that stage - he needs a lot of care and healing within the game's early stages.
Over and above that, Morrigan and Alistair's dialogues are priceless!
Now and again I'll take other companions along for various reasons, but the above team is always my 'A Team'.
I must admit that I occasionally meta-game the system in order to build approval with the likes of Sten (who's notoriously difficult to get into the Friendly stages without a lot of gift-giving, unless you use him a lot, and tend to be uncompromising in your actions. I'll take Sten with me into the inn in Redcliff, and recruit the elf and Lloyd into the militia, in the knowledge that this gives me a lot of Sten approval

Well I enthusiastically and cheerfully use the Respec Mod. Whilst I guess this might seem like 'cheating' to some...
It can hardly be called cheating when the game part of the game (ruleset, combat mechanics and so on) is not only still in the late alpha stage but completely undocumented to boot.
Almost all in-game descriptions of skills, talents and spells are incomplete, misleading or downright wrong, and most contain only inane blather instead of any useful information. Some talents/spells are awesome (Mana Clash), some are totally useless (Mana Cleanse), but without anything resembling adequate documentation the player is completely out at sea.
The Mana Cleanse spell is a typical example. Its description says 'The caster sacrifices personal mana to nullify the mana of enemies in the area'. Mana Clash and Glyph of Neutralisation actually do nullify enemy mana but Mana Cleanse isn't supposed to that. Apparently it was intended to eliminate a small amount of the enemy mana, not all of it, so the description would be wrong even if the spell worked as intended, which it doesn't. Instead it increases enemy mana. As such it is completely useless. The wiki suggests that it might be used preparatory to a Mana Clash, but a simple fireball would be three times as efficient for the purpose and much safer than giving fresh mana to enemy mages.
As a first time player you are bound to make quite a few decisions that you are going to regret later, since the information that you have at your disposal is absolutely zero. Zilch. Nada. But you are going to be stuck with those mistakes for a hundred hours of playing time or a couple of weeks real time. Not only that, but you have to make sensible decisions for your companions as well since the auto-level function is completely and utterly useless except perhaps for two-handers. Excuse me? A first-timer will have more than enough problems dealing with their own character, how are they supposed to have sensible plans for all their companions as well?
Respeccing is an absolute necessity under these circumstance unless you want to test your frustration tolerance to its limits. I 'respecced' one toon (Alayna) by replaying levels 1 through 8 from an early save, because that was how far back the mistake was made. I respecced her again around level 20 - via the console this time - by removing one useless talent and adding another one instead; I had no intention of replaying almost 10 levels just to correct a minor error in judgement. The drag wasn't so much the fighting as all those interminable cutscenes and dialogues and running around that you have to go through every time, especially after the darkspawn assault on Redcliffe.
IMHO the developers should have been forced to play the game with auto-levelled toons, no access to outside information like wiki or forums, and a zero death tolerance (e.g. no 'injuries' on any character screen, companions included) in order to compensate for any insider advantage they might have over a normal first-time player. Those who fail would be paid with cancelled checks or banknotes, which after all contain everything that makes up the real ones, down to the last molecule; they just don't work quite as well.

I very much take your points about the need for respeccing, though frankly I'd not want to play without my respec mod.

What I say is 2 mages, Wynne and Morrigan (or Wynne and player mage, but never Morrigan and player mage). Then grab 1 rouge and a warrior or 2 warriors. I prefer to keep rouges out of battle unless you set in their tactics to permanently stealthed. HINT HINT!

Currently playing with the uninspired team of Alistair, Tank; Morrigan, CC; Leliana, Archer; Warden, DW Rogue

I play mage myself most of the times and pick Morrigan, Alistair and Zevran. I always harden Alistair ASAP so he wont disapprove a lot of things I might do lol.

Always Alistair as the only other warden. Wynne as spirit healer and also like her to have mortality curse. The last usually depends on where I am - deep roads, I take Shale and mix her up with Oghren (if my PC is a mage I would leave Wynne out). Forest I would take Zevran. I also take the dog everywhere (modded)

Depends:
my favorites are: Alistiar,Wynne,Leliana.
if I'm rping heavily: Alisitiar,Shale and Dog since they have taint immunity.
if I want diversity: Leliana,Sten and Oghren or Zevran.
if I want power/CC: Morrigan,Leliana and Wynne.

I don't really swap my companions around based on the situations I encounter, but it depends on which class my character is when deciding who's with me. Alistair and Morrigan are always with me no matter what class my character is, but if I'm playing as a warrior, then Leliana is usually my third companion, and if I'm playing as a rogue then my third companion can be anyone really. I always take Shale with me into the Deep Roads, because it sets up her personal quest nicely, and I always take Leliana with me during The Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, because she's a firm believer in the Maker. That's about the only situations I can think of that has me swapping that third companion.

Alistair - only other warden and tank
Wynne - mage and spirit healer (heal all and revive come in handy)
Lolly - ranged only (otherwise she annoys)
The last slot dependent on where I am
I also have extra dog slot so he is always there

To be completely honest, I wish DAO could put 5 persons in a party rather than 4. Why? Let me start by saying that i have a profound team w/c are Morrigan, Leliana, Alistar and myself. Morrigan is crowd control and disabler, Leliana as an epic archer! PEW PEW!, Alistar as the unkillable tank and myself as the mother f***ing rogue that kills them via backstab. Why i would need 5? I'd love to have Morrigan focus on CC&Disable but since she can't because i need a healer even if Alistar is particularly unkillable so Morrigan alternates as a rejuvenator/group healer/ revival here. . so my Morrigan is F**KIN EPIC! but the CC and disable is toned down. At Circle of Magi when you need to have Wynne on the party. . it was my first time in the entire game that i could waste tons of fatigue and still get those CCs and Disables to its maximum capacity basically the mobs couldn't even hit me. Wynne as the rejuvenator/group healer/ revival and Morrigan as CC&Disable at full capacity is the ****. But I'm missing Leliana's 1k Arrow of Slaying and Scatter shots w/c helps against hordes of DS. But I still stick with Morrigan,Leliana and Alistar with me coz there are no female tanks so i stick with the dumb warden/king as the tank.

My Warden of course, Leliana as a Rogue/Assassin/Duelist ... Alistair as a Warrior/Templar/Berserker ... Wynne as a Mage/Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior and as an extra my faithful Mabari.
