There were several assassination attempts. Iirc it's not stated whether any of them succeeded, but it is stated that Bhelen lived to a ripe old age.

What does that entail for the Aeducan monarchy? Endrin Jr. is the rightful king? The Adeucan line is now the permanent monarchy? What about a DN Warden? He/She is by right the 3rd heir to the throne

The Assembly almost certainly tried to claim their right of kingmaking before Bhelen was cold. It's not stated whether they succeeded.

Bhelen. Orzammar's isolationism and caste system have left them in dire straits. Bhelen offers reforms in increased free trade with the surface and weakening the caste system. Harrowmont offers more of the same. It's true that Bhelen is scum, but I use a medical analogy where Orzammar is a sick patient. If it had gone to the doctor earlier the disease could have been caught in its early stages and required gentler treatments. After centuries Orzammar is at death's door and only massively invasive procedures will save it.

I always ended up choosing Bhelen. The only one who considered giving Harrowmont the crown was my Dwarf Commoner, and she only chose Bhelen because of her sister, mother and niece/nephew.

Bhelen, both with and without meta-gaming. My canon Warden didn't really care about Orzammar and just wanted his troops as fast as possible. A few comments from Zev, plus a meeting where Harrowmont said he'd TRY to get him his troops, and he was switching sides like, well, a switch was flipped.

My other Wardens did relatively the same, for different reasons; my Mage listened around, heard Harrowmont was in favor of the caste system and thus slavery in her eyes, and went with Bhelen. My Commoner picked Bhelen because of Rica, my DN chose him because he'd proved himself the better leader in her eyes, and my City Elf went with him because she approved of his ideas of change. The only one who didn't, my HN, chose Harrowmont because Bhelen reminded him of Howe and Loghain.

During the game, there isn't really that much hard evidence that Bhelen would make a better king for Orzammar. It's just what he SAYS he will do, and he's lied before. Whether people want to admit it or not, the epilogue makes him the better choice, not his actons in game.The writers could alter the epilogue and everyone would be picking Harrowmount due to his more noble nature.

Either way, your Warden gets his or her dwarves for the final battle with Archie.It's not like Harrowmount sends less dwarves.
