In the only thread I could find on the matter, people seemed pretty convinced that it was Earth.

To those that are, please compare the following images:

The massive discrepancy in planet size to moon size/orbital distance between that moon and the planet tells me right away that that isn't Earth.

Interestingly, the size ratio seems much closer to the worlds we see at the end of the Trilogy:

Also worth noting is that we do hear "Vigil" during both instances.

Sorry if this has already been pointed out. I suspect it did, but got washed away by other things related to the ending.

I always thought it was weird, but dismissed it as just some artistic license for the design of the title screen. The little moon was pretty unnecessary though.

It's Earth, it's just an artistic rendition. It looks cool, but yes, it is inaccurate. Still, very minor gripe, seeing as its just a starting screen.

Saying it's the same planet as we saw in the star gazer scene implies they thought that far ahead.
It's Earth.

Yeah, but they got the size right more or less in the actual game, and that's not the same image/model:

I also don't recognize the continent on the title screen, nor have I ever seen images of Earth with purple gas coming off of it.

Why does it have to be Earth?

No it doesn't. At most it implies that they thought to reference it when they made ME3. It's still an apparently unnamed planet of unspecified significance either way.

OP, I'm going to say this:

You're over-thinking it.

It's a bloody title screen.

Aren't you one of the people that defends the logic of the endings?

In your headcanon, maybe.

To the rest of us, it's quite clearly Earth. Inaccurately portrayed for the sake of artistic renditioning, but still Earth.

lol, I know the Luna image is messed up, but we're told that's Earth. We're never told what we're looking at in the opening.

Okay... why? Why does it have to be Earth? Where is it said that it's Earth?

As said above it is mostly Earth given that the planet is blue and green with white clouds (aka the image of Earth that has permeated into the general culture). The discrepancies are most likely the artist not knowing/caring about them since most players wouldn't know or care. It's a lot like how older movies use the wrong trains all the time; train aficionados would know the differences when most people just think old trains = any steam train.

Why would they give us a random unnamed planet in ME1 for a title screen than if it had no significance in the plot and only later appeared in that scene 3 games later?
Let me put it another way the opening scene of ME1 has Shep looing out a window over a simliar planet after which we see the Normandy flying out of the Sol system, if there's any significance to the planet in the title it's there as your starting point for your jounrey much like in ME3,

that's where the story starts.

Other planets in ME1 that fit this discription:

Nodacrux
Eletania
Virmire
Chasca
Proteus

Mass Effect 1 had a large focus on exploration and discovery, including discovery of new life. Putting a random garden world on the title screen makes sense.

And I'm not saying they planned this from the start, just that they may have thought to reference it again at the end.

These responses are great; you people have dragged yourself through so much double-think trying to weasle your way out of the endings that you can't see anything as something other than praise of Bioware or scorn of Bioware. Calm the **** down; I'm not implying anything about the dead the equines you're abusing.

So would it being Earth as that's your starting point.

That is true, but I don't see any concrete reason why it would more likely be one way than the other, given that we are never told what it is, nor does it match Earth in non-superficial ways.

I tend to adhere to Occam's razor in these situations.
