It was totally Earth. Then they returned to Earth in the ME3 intro screen. ME2, of course, had to be the rebel by showing the Collector home base in the black hole at the center of the universe.

That is true, but I don't see any concrete reason why it would more likely be one way than the other, given that we are never told what it is, nor does it match Earth in non-superficial ways.

Exactly, people in general don't know anything about the non-superficial details.

So because the fan-base has a limited grasp of how our solar system looks, the people that put a huge emphasis on accurately representing solar systems are going out of their way in this singular instance to cater to  their ignorance?

Somehow, I'm not convinced that Occam's Razor is on your side.

This also seems like a strange thing to be upset about.

Except, they probably aren't the same people. Whoever designed the title scene was probably some artist who was told to make an image of a planet (most likely Earth) look cool. And having the right proportions would most likely not make an image as cool looking.

As I said OP, you're seriously over-thinking this.

OP you seem to be putting far too much effort into this.

Occam's Razor OP.

You can sit and put a lot of effort into thinking that it's a garden world or unknown star system in the title screen about human space exploration and the future of the Earth.

Or you can say its the Earth with an obvious artistic rendition put in it.

I always assumed it was Eden Prime in ME1, and in ME3 it was Earth

LOL loved the earth from the moon, was backwards... Someone must have really not paid attention during beta to miss that one. :D

It's not Earth -- that's what they want you to think. It's another place. Beyond this system. Beyond the Milky Way.

What do you think the breath scene is all about? It's a gasp of disbelief from Shepard, upon learning the real identity of the planet.

All of this will be revealed in Mass Effect 4. I thought it would happen in the last DLC -- turns out I was wrong -- but just you wait.

Okay, I'll bite: what if it's not? What purpose would that serve?

I don't know, I've just always wondered what planet it is. I always assumed it wasn't Earth (because of the moon), just like you all assumed it was.

At this point, if it's not Earth, I'd just think it's little more than a motif, and it'd be cool if the ending image was actually a subtle reference.

This forum's just so full of it's own doctrine that they seemed to have interpreted this as a suggestion that the endings were in someway related to ME1, which is sacrilige for the ****posting copy-pasting T.A.O.ists.

Um... we all pretty much stated that the discrepancy is easily explained by artistic license (it certainly wouldn't be the only instance of such an event occuring). I'm not quite sure what the ending of ME3 has to do with anything.

It's more that we just don't find the idea very compeling on it's own.

Think about it, let's say you're right and it's a random unexplored planet to invoke a sense of wonder and mystery. Why would you make it so similar in appearance to Earth so that the very feeling you're trying to invoke would be lost on so many people? Give it 3 moons, make the clouds purple, do something to make it stand out and show that it's actually a different planet.

Whatever planet this is, it must be full of heroes.
