It won't be very optimal as mages add a lot of damage, crowd control, and healing to the team, but it's doable. Additionally, friendly-fire can become an issue with too many melee characters.

Here's the all-melee setup I came up with for a DW rogue. It probably won't be as effective with an archer hawke, since it relies heavily on lacerate.

However, since you're willing to bring along archer companions, you could potentially go 3 archers + Aveline, or a S&S hawke with 2 archers and a DW rogue/buffer warrior.

The idea in this case would be to cluster enemies around the warrior, disorient them with fatiguing fog/disorienting criticals, then explode them all with scatter & assault CCCs. Having multiple melee characters with friendly-fire abilities isn't very feasible without pause play, so the only options are to have only one melee character or to manually control the one character with friendly-fire abilities (and try to avoid hitting party members as much as possible).

So with this logic, a S&S hawke can either have isabela dealing spike damage via lacerate/stagger CCCs (with the risk of accidentally one-shotting her), or a buffer warrior relying on self-buffs and autoattacks for damage and having more of an utility role (buffing the party with rally, crowd controlling enemies with pommel strike, drawing threat, etc).

The main downside to the archer/warrior combination is the lack of CCCs and spike damage. Besides S&S CCCs, there aren't really any setups available. And unlike DW rogues, archers only have 1-2 proper spike damage abilities (assassinate and archer's lance), and get heavily affected by the 40% damage cap post-patch. DW rogues get around it by wielding two weapons and dealing damage over time via lacerate. Archers have no such luck, so despite their ability to dish out something like 300k+ damage pre-patch, they can't one-shot a basic elite anymore.

This will mean that the archers will have to rely more on crowd-controlling the elites with pinning shots and focus firing auto-attacks, since they lack the spike damage neccesary to kill them in one-shot (i.e. lacerate + twin fangs/explosive strike/assassinate/vendetta).

Long story short, non-mage runs or even soloing nightmare is doable, but easiest with DW rogues. As long as you keep a relatively dps-heavy setup and kill off dangerous enemies asap, you should be able to through most fights fairly easily. However, the lack of party synergy/CCCs will mean that it will be noticeably less effective than standard mage parties, something I mostly managed to avoid in that all-melee setup.
