Hi all, I just got DA:O ultimate edition on the steam sale it had.  I like the game alot and I consider myself a decent player at these style games so I love playing them on the hardest setting even on first playthru's.

However, this game on Nightmare I am finding rather tough, tougher than other games of this style.  I'm still pretty early in the game.  I got to that town with the 3 groups of bandits in the fields and took them out but I had to do it VERY carefully.

Like I literally had to keep my party back in a hold position and pulled individual enemies with my archer to make the groups easier to take out.  Almost felt like I was playing an MMO and playing in a group setting.  I don't have a real healer yet in my party and I don't have many good skills / abilities yet nor any good armor or weapons.

So I am wondering is the rest of the game gonna be just as tough or will it get to the point where I don't have to fight EVERY group with such caution.  I don't mind doing it every so often but every group it can get tiresome.  I'm thinkin once I get a pure healer in my party and some new items and lvl up a bit I will have more freedom to run into battles?  Any reply I will appreciate and or tips would be cool too but not neccessary. =]

It will be tougher. The bandits are pretty basic enemies with few special abilities. Once you begin to encounter elites (such as revenants) and/or mages, the battles become much more tedious. For example, the curse of mortality is a really nasty spell. It will constantly drain your health while it simultaneously prevents healing of any kind.

If you haven't yet done so, I'd suggest you set up tactics for your party members. It will significantly increase their usefulness.

I am sure there are strategies posted for playing on nightmare, probably on gamefaqs, that could help you.I don't bother to play on nightmare. The character interaction is what is important to me, not the combat.

It is a reasonably challenging game (especially if you're doing nightmare on you're first run!) but I find the difficulty curve tends to flatten out. Yes the enemies do get tougher, but so do you, and if you're building efficiently (which is key - nerfing a character is easy but a costly mistake) then you should find the game getting slightly easier. It's not huge, but I'd say you've pretty much hit the toughest point in the game, difficulty-wise. And yes, the healer is a very powerful addition to your party.

Setting up tactics for your companions does dramatically improve their efficiency. Their default ones are okay, but don't be afraid to fiddle with them to suit the way you're building them.

Also, you are about to hit the 'open world' middle section of the game where you can choose which order you do your missions in. While the difficulty does scale to some degree, some levels are still noticably harder than others. The best ones to do first are the Mage's Tower and Redcliffe. The DLC missions (The Stone Prisoner - represented on the map as Sulcher's Pass; Warden's Keep - represented as Soldier's Peak after speaking with Levi Dryden in camp; and Return to Ostagar - represented as Bann Loren's Lands) are also good to do early - they are generally shorter and easier than the treaty missions, and they contain some rather tasty loot (not to mention a kick-ass companion). Leave Orzammar until last.

Also bare in mind that some of the most challenging encounters scattered throughout the game are optional (most Revenants, for example), so don't feel you need to clear out every mission as you go. There's nothing wrong with just doing the essential stuff, and then returning later with a beefier party (and perhaps one optimised for the fight) to clear out the optional enemies.

I'll echo what ferret is saying, but yeah, around lothering is probably the toughest part if you're building your characters well (except possibly with a PC mage). You don't have heavy or massive armour yet for your tank, so they'll still go down fast. Nor do you have a healer or any decent crowd control, so its hard to stop that damage from happening, and healing it relies on a tank who isn't currently stunned or knocked down, which isn't a guarantee. A PC mage can make this easier because they can give your party said healing and/or crowd control.

If you're not a mage, you can make another person who is a mage in your group became a healer, i find having a healer helps big time.
