I'm hoping for a non-human protagonist. Not holding my breath or anything, but hoping. It'd be fun to have the paragon/renegade meter reflect the morality of another race/culture.

Not really.

Of course it would David.  Imagine embodying a Turian and having it's "culture" conflict with experiences that develop him/her throughout a game.  Or an Asari who wants to become green.  The experiences that could be had...

I have no problems with culture clash. However, the paragon/renegade meter or any such equivalent is essentially a component of the narrator. It's the game 'telling' the player what's good and what isn't. So basing on that radically different morals and principles would rightfully ****** people off.

So call it the good-turian/bad-turian meter?

As opposed to you getting upset because people don't all think what you think is good and right is worthwhile?

Let's not kid ourselves: You only care about your own interests, and put a veneer of 'everyone' over it to try to objectify your opinion.

I'm wondering how they're going to work 'N7' in for a character not in the Alliance.

Simple. Don't make the character N7. Problem solved.

That's a very insightful suggestion. An indicator of how well they player is thought of without tying it to morality.

Of course, it would almost certainly lead to a choice or many choices between doing the right thing and the popular thing. Which would in turn would almost certainly mean being the hero means being hated. That would likely be very tricky to pull off.

Mmm. You know, thinking about it, I'm not so sure it would work very well at all.

To clarify my original post, I assumed that any new meter would use different names to reflect the different morals. Calling it the same thing would lead to quite a bit of confusion for both new players and veterans.

The problem is such a meter would only work if the player finds value in the er...values of it. So if the player finds elements of turian culture stupid or morally wrong (which they surely would if it's significantly different from western human values), the meter falls apart. Players would rightfully become angry when the game 'tells' them they're wrong for disagreeing with a turian value they find ridiculous or repulsive.

Now alternatively, the meter could be set up to be intentionally stupid but yet appealing to players because it's crowd pleasing and culture pleasing. So players aren't meant to find value in the actions themselves, but value in the reactions of society or whatever. But that has a whole host of problems of its own.

If they allow us to pick our species I don't think its necessary. I like being the Alliance but I can't see it work out if they let us pick our species maybe we could be apart of C-sec then made a specter?

I would lose the morality mechanic totally. Too preachy IMO

Re-tag it. Possibly, "aggression-diplomacy" or "ideology" (separation/integration)

And I would hope to see branching options and have the development of these variables reflected in game story

I wouldn't mind seeing them hide the morality scale altogether. Being that it's a game it's going to be oversimplified no matter what they do: morality, factions, etc. Because if they go factions they really need to go microfactions, and that uses too many resources. And even ideology can get complicated.

And what is this character going to be? I'm hoping the protagonist isn't dumber than a box of rocks this time. I've about had it with the "good is dumb" trope. Yes the protag's side makes mistakes. But "Ah yes, 'reapers.' We've dismissed that myth." Really? (at least give the protag an opportunity to airquote the idiot later) And... "I will not let fear compromise who I am." Of course, this means more sophisticated antagonists and thus a more complex story. Can Bioware do it?

Julia, did you know that the trope 'Good is not dumb' was actually briefly named 'The Shepard' in honor of Mass Effect on TV Tropes? It was.

You should give up on this nonsense.

Did you know that citing TV Tropes as a source discredits your argument? Especially when you have been known to have gone on there and edited pages about Mass Effect to say what you want them to say?

I have an account. I can go onto a TV Tropes page and cite it as an example after writing whatever I want it to say and stating it as proof.

You know, as a scientist, you should know that skewing evidence to your own advantage is tantamount to professional suicide since you're only citing something that you yourself can control.

It's kind of why I don't think you're a scientist.

You should give up on this nonsense.

Honestly, I'd like it if the protagonist was a merc or something. I'm pretty much done with games where you start out as a soldier or you become a soldier early on and stick with that the rest of the game. I want a bit more freedom to BS around between missions and probably have a home base where I can just chill. I don't want a game where the protagonist basically lives on his/her ship. Did that for the entire trilogy and I'm kind of bored of it. Maybe do something similar to what was done in DA2 and have each of your companions have their own homes instead of living on a ship with you.

That red/blue nonsense concerning morals should be thrown out of the window imho. All it does is that you are hardpressed to choose a grey option because the nonsense meter screws your choices in later conflicts where you need the red/blue special options which are always preferable to the bland but sensible ones. In essence all it does is radicalize the player options instead of allowing the player to play how he wants to.

Create consequences in the story, not via a meter or limiting options. Blow up a colony for the bigger good? Well, make that increase difficulty lateron when you'd have really needed some support from those guys. Be a dick to your comrade? Well, get friendzoned by you LI because he/she doesn't like this kind of behaviour.

Yes, I would rather be part of the Alliance. ME2 was not a good show.

No i would prefer not to be within the Alliance.
Just as i would have preferred not to have been forced back within the alliance in ME3.
So ideally i'd like to be a free agent

If the character absolutely has to be Alliance, I'd prefer a Corsair to a straight-up soldier.

Also I want to play as an Asari or a Turian(maybe in a future playthrough) this time. Why the hell would I be in the alliance.

It is hard to say without knowing what the plot of the next game is. There are some roles to which protagonist with a military background is much better suited. A space pirate or a smuggler wouldn't have worked for the protagonist of the Shepard trilogy for example, with the backdrop being to prevent (ME1 and ME2) and then win (ME3) a potentially civilization-ending war that would claim billions of lives.

If the next protagonist were a space pirate, the plot would also have to be much smaller scale. It should be a personal quest rather than one with a massive impact on galactic history. Military characters are a better fit for the latter.

Personally I thought the military atmosphere of the first and third games was both fun, and mostly well-executed. (compared to most other Sci Fi)

I certainly wouldn't mind another military protagonist, though I also wouldn't mind the series going in another direction, so long as the plot was molded to fit the protag's background.

I guess I would like the protagonist to be a simpler space pirate or mercenary, because as Han said that could mean a smaller, more personal story, which is what Mass Effect seems to be best at.
