I've mentioned this before in months past on different but related topics.

I always thought it would be cool to play as an employee of a multi-national company whose job is exploration and colony development.  This would be an interesting position to be in if it happened after the trilogy...only a tiny percentage of the galaxy was explored in the original trilogy anyway, and in the aftermath of the Reaper war, rebuilding and exploring new territory would become a priority.

It would put the player in a position to do a lot of exploration into the unknown which was one of the fun things about ME1.  The setting would also lend itself to origins stories similar to DAO, so if you wanted to be an ex Asari commando, or an ex Alliance Marine, or whatever, it would be open to you.

This sounds really interesting--especially because it would work as any race.  I'd love to play as a salarian, but given the large number of corporate themes in the first two ME games, and the number of NPCs who are represented as employees of those corps, this would be a cool way to bring a civilian (a la DAO) into a larger threat.

And now that I think about it....

A lot of people want freedom, so you could start the game as a one man operation, or maybe have one or two good employees, and you have to build your company's resources as you go along and do it in any number of ways that suits you as the player.  Initially the story is spun as a venture into creating a profitable business, but as the plot unfolds, as you explore unknown areas and encounter the main threat of the story, the protagonist determines he has to build resources to oppose the said threat.

I think it has a lot of potential, and opens up the field somewhat.  While I love having military types around and loved being in the Alliance, this sort of game would give you the freedom to have more civilians around; not everyone has to be an N7, an STG type, or an Asari commando.  On the flip side, there's enough room in this plot to still have those types around for people like me who enjoy it.  And if you go with a DAO origins type mechanic for the protagonist, you could even choose to be such a person or not.

Didn't read whole thread, probably been said. Would like the choice of race/class/spec myself. Ideal situation - space skyrim on a better engine.

Being realistic? at the very least a non-human player character would be great.

I expect something frelike Dragon Age Origins, being able to play as more than humans, and being able to choose the "Civilian" pre-service history, and start the game as a civilian who through certain circumastances joins the Alliance.

I like this idea but, why have the protangonist join the military?  Why not be a bounty hunter, or a merc, or something else?  Could have the story take place in the Terminus Systems.

I like your idea too. I just find the idea of starting out as a civilian interesting, then getting involved with the military later on. And I like the Terminus Systems.

I do too, but they never touched on it much in ME1 and ME3.  In ME2, it was just where the majority of the missions are found.  They talk about it a bit, but they never go into much detail.  Would be interesting to see what life is actually like in the Terminus...

I agree with this, definitely made me think of Firefly. I was hoping for something along those lines in the next Mass Effect

Depends on the overall storyline, I wouldn't mind having the chance to be a protagonist who can be in a bit of conflict with the "good guys" such as the Alliance. To me, the Alliance is a bit like the Republic of Mass Effect and I've never liked the Republic.

I don't see the Alliance as good or bad. It's just kind of.... boy scoutish and Tom Cruise-y. Which is bad, but in a different way.

Less crew cuts please.

I like being a soldier type. But, I'm in hate of the Alliance. They and the Council need not be in ME4.

I have no doubt that the plot will somehow push the PC into an "elite" group that is above the military anyway.

No there should be a unified police/Army force with people taken from all races answerable only to the council tasked with policing the Galaxy.

Personally, I'm hoping we're in a post-destroy galaxy that hasn't yet re-unified. The Alliance, let alone the Council system, doesn't even need to exist- let the pre-war xeno-states be shattered, balkanized, and reorganized along 'geographic' space before the relays are rebuilt and reconnect everyone. Let the Alliance, or the Heirarchy, or any other pre-war xeno-state be little more than rump states or homeworlds that may want to reunify the species, but faced with autonomous/independent regions who have no interest in submitting just because some grand-grand-granddaddies thought a racial caste system was the best way to organize the galaxy.

In a context like that, being an Alliance soldier again would be a bit of a waste.

At least then we wouldn't have to follow the orders of some old war relic and won't have to say "Ho-ah!" ever again.

I'm wondering how they're going to work 'N7' in for a character not in the Alliance.

A lot of people became part of the N7 ops in the Reaper war. They wern't really alliance but they were employed and directed by Hacket and Hacket was alliance.

If you look at the N7 roster you got everything but Elchor and Hanar.

Maybe someone who isn't military but happens to get drawn into something by chance or bad luck, being in the wrong place.

Biotic ball Athlete, Geth engineer or C-sec officer. Whatever the character or race you pick you endup in that wrong place for some crazy reason.

There is no way out, you've been marked.

The bad guys may consider you a witness, they might belive you got soemthing they want or know something. The authorities might consider you a suspect or a resource to use, as a bait if nothing else.

Only if the character isn't military.

If the protagonist is military, hair styles should be short.

I've noticed a shortage of good-looking short hairstyles for men in games. For too many games, there's dozens of wacky-looking longish hairstyles and maybe a couple of short ones that look halfway decent.

So yes, short hairstyles should be anything but cut back.

Heh Heh. 'Cut back.' Heh.

It's an interesting question, but it bounces off the more releveant question of, 'what will the next Mass Effect game be about?'

Since hoomans are spechul, I have no doubt the protagonist will be human - then if s/he is in the Alliance is then an open question. My stance has not changed: I would prefer an upgrade of both ME1 and 2 to ME3's standard and an expansion of the overall triology (no more eavesdropping and probing missions for example), and thus the protagonist would be Shepard, an Alliance N7 officer.

So yeah. I'm all for an Alliance character in the next installment.

I would like an option to be an alliance solider along with options of being a c-sec officer, merc, pirate, or bounty hunter

I would say no simply because I want the option of non-human playable characters. Plus a change would be good.
