Kaiden is dull and bland. Few people take offense with him. Ashley is strongly opinionated and outspoken. You either like her or dislike her. There is little middle ground.

Those who dislike her revel in leaving her on Virmire. Those who like her leave Kaiden behind. The only impact of me losing Kaiden was when I walk to the med-bay, I sometimes think "didn't someone used to hang around that spot? Who was that again? Jenkins?"

That's why I think Ashley is actually the best character (other than Wrex) in the game. She actually provoked a response, good or bad.

I left her to die, Kaidan is one of my favorite characters because he reminds me of Carth from the good old KotOR days and the fact that I think that Kaidan is a more usefull squadmate

In my first playthrough I was a female Shepard and I still killed Kaidan. He's so plain it wasn't a hard choice. The strange thing is, and no offense to Clumsy Astronaut, but I was just about to say "Actually, he reminds me of Carth from KotOR because they're both so plain" so I guess we agree but for different reasons.

I guess I'm the only one who thought it was a hard choice. I really agonized over the decision. Shepard sat there for five full minutes dramatically staring into the distance while I made up my mind. The first time I played I saved Ashley even though I was in a romance with Liara. Ashley was a soldier like me so I figured my character might have a love for her in a brothers-in-arms sort of way.

From a certain point of view, the more "dramatic" storyline is to romance Ash or Kai while also having conflicted romantic feelings for Liara, then let the one you love die on Virmire and find solace in Liara's arms. It has this whole interplay of tragedy and guilt... Part of me wonders if this'll be the way they play it for the movie (assuming the movie actually charts the story of ME1).

That said, it's only my cynical part that thinks this is fitting. The rest of me just hates the choice on Virmire. Ash and Kai are both amazing characters, and I feel terrible no matter which one of them dies.

Kaidan is a horrible character :| incredibly bland, and very whiney.
Ashley is better, Gameplay and character-wise.
I hate her for her views, though.

For someone who decries blandness, you have a remarkably unnuanced view of Ashley.  Ashley is defensive in her attitude towards aliens and does not trust them to treat humanity well, but she does not hate them (she openly disagrees with Terra Firma and opposes Cerberus completely).  Personally, I think her attitude could be improved, but I can also see why she has it.  It's part of her family history and she has experienced the fallout in her own life.

As for Kaidan, you must use a different definition of "whiney" than I do.  When gently ribbed by Shepard, who asks if/how she is supposed to help him get over his experiences in BAaT, Kaidan responds with amusement: he is 32 years old, and has dealt with his past quite some time ago.  If he does still have a few subliminal hang-ups from BAaT (like extreme reserve and need for self-control), these are just the kinds of quirks or character hooks that make squad members interesting.

Ultimately, I fail to see how one can complain about characters' imperfections on the one hand and then call them boring on the other hand.  Surely a character who had no potentional for development (due to already being perfect) would be the dullest character possible?

And, on the topic of which Alliance squad member is better in terms of gameplay, that largely depends on what class you play as Shepard, and what playstyle you choose.  For my Infiltrator, Kaidan plus Wrex made the perfect team.  But I would never claim they'd work as well for everyone.

I find myself wondering what some people's standards for real-life friends or co-workers might be, if they regard Ashley and Kaidan (who I would regard as very interesting and quite upstanding people) as so horrendous.

The thing is, I think both Ash and Kaidan are great characters. I have taken turns sacrificing the both of them, just to see how the story flows in both instances. For my main character's game, though, Ashley had to go. It wasn't that I hated her, because I don't. She's a strong willed, somewhat stubborn character, who stands up for her beliefs and refuses to back down. But love makes people do crazy things, and my character had to save Kaidan. It's kind of unfair when you think of it that way, that the only reason he got to survive was because he was flirting with his commanding officer, but it kind of adds an element of guilt to both Shepard and Kaidan if things play out that way.

It was hard to say goodbye, especially when I saw the relationship between Ashley and my character as kind of an big sis-little sis sort of thing, and I shared guilt with my FemShep when she watched that explosion from the speeding Normandy. It's like what Shep and Joker discussed afterwards, it's a terrible call to make, and one that I'd personally never like to in real life.

Ashley was cool in ME1, but I hated speaking to her in ME2. Kaidan just made me feel like recruiting garrus for the first time, which was awesome. I'd love Kaidan back. he was my second favourite squadmate in ME1.

But yes, I have killed of Ashley, and loved every second of it. Hahaha

I usually kill Ashley in my Renegade Sheps, because Kaidan is an officer and outranks Ashley, so he is more important. And I my Renegade Sheps never let personal feelings affects mission. But usually in my Paragon MaleSheps(which are most of my Sheps), I save her, even not being my LI, just to provoke a love triangle xD

the love triangle is the best part. it makes me laugh when you get to the point where you offer a three way

The problem with Bioware characterisation in general is that pretty much everything that happens to the characters was all in the past. The only character development that happens to them is they learn to trust Shepard. You learn about them not through their actions in the plot of the games but by their lectures on their past. In other words, remove their lengthy dissertations on their past, and the vast majority of the personality vanishes.

This is more true for Kaidan than any other character. Garrus, Wrex, Liara and Tali all have enough apparent personality in the current events of the game, conveyed via how you recruit them, their personal missions or their general comments throughout the game. Ash has less than them but still a reasonable amount. Kaidan has pretty much none. He's just a generic Mary Sue (or whatever the male equivalent is) and his one bit of personality is revealed in that one story about how he got angry at the turian instructor and killed him .

Incidentally, compare that to Joker. His personality is conveyed very much in the present tense, there's only a brief little story about his past, the rest is relayed through his actions and words about what's currently happening.
