Of my six Shepards (three of them male, three of them female), four of them (two male/two female) sacrificed Ashley and only two let Ashley live. I did so for different reasons based on the kind of character I'm playing.
Two of my three male Shepards sacrificed Ashley because they were bros with Kaiden (not that they didn't like Ashley, but Kaiden to them-and to me- is much more mature and rational, while two of my three female Shepards, including my canon Shep, sacrificed Ashley because they were romancing Kaiden.
Only one of my male Shepards saved Ashley and that was only because he was romancing her while one of my female Shepards saved her simply as a playthrough of having the same gender saved (people usually save the opposite depending on the gender they play).
I just like Kaiden better than Ashley. Less attitude and a great asset for non-biotic characters. Believe it or not it has nothing to due with her religious views (I happen to believe in God/Higher Power in real life) or her sentiments towards aliens but rather just preference here.
