Wouldn't The Option to Play as Female Qunari Be Lore-Contradicting?

I'v been reading the thread asking what class, race & gender people wanna play, and I noticed that a lot of people are saying that they want to play as Qunari Female. Now, if you remember back in DAO if the warden is female Sten becomes confused on why is a woman is fighting, and he clearly states that women are priests, farmers, tailers, etc. and they don't fight, by that he was clearly refering to the Qunari women, he also has a special banter with female party members (Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne) asking them why are they fighting.

So clearly the idea of playing as Qunari female character is an obvious lore-contradiction, what I find even more lore-contradicting is the option to play as Qunari mage, for anyone who played DA2 should have a pretty good idea of what qunari do to their mages.

I know that Bioware said that players will have the option to play as Qunari inquisitor, but have they confirmed that there will be an option to play as a Qunari female/mage?

Your Female horny giant is not a "Qunari" but a TalVashoth so there isn't a contradiction

and yes i'll be calling them horny giants when referring to the race.
just hoping it'll catch on you know, like horny giants doing the merigold and shimmiing away.

^_^

Isn't that like saying that criminal policemen are a real life "lore contradiction" because policemen actually work against crime? ;)

Not really. I think we have to make some distinctions for this one.

There are 2 types of Qunari.

1) Qunari that embrace the Qun

2) Qunari that do not.

The Qunari we would most likely be playing is the Qunari that does not embrace the Qun.  Remember the Qunari that does not embrace the Qun does not necessarily have to be Tal-Vashoth. They can just be a Qunari that just wants to live their lives on their own terms / own ways..

We would most likely play that Qunari.

The Qunari you're playing isn't a member of the Qun, so she'll be a Tal Vashoth, hence her being an asskicker.

Yes, we don't play as member of the Qun so it's fine.

However, for the record, Qunari women can fight, just not under the Arishok. They fight in the Ben-Hassrath, effectively the Qunari's secret police, where fighting is not the role's specific aim, more of a mean's to the end.

Well, and technically all Qunari 'civilians' can fight as well, they just don't do it as a permanent lifestyle. As you say Elfman, female qunari can be the ninja-priests and assassins, but not a soldier as that's a 'man job'.

Pretty much this.

Even if she was part of the Qun, as long as she answered to the Ariqun, she is not against the Qun at all because priest can and have been showen to fight when they have too and that's also where Ben-Hassrath fall under.

Now if she was part of the Qun and answered to the Atrishok then yes, there then would be a massive problem.

Not really, there are several Qunari that leave the Qun and become tal-vashoth because they don't fully embrace the beliefs of the Qun. The only reasons we see only male Qunari/Tal is because only males are chosen to be warriors and the Qun only sends warriors to foreign lands. It's not hard to imagine a female Qunari going Tal-vashoth because they want to fight then later in life travel to the south, in hopes of starting a new life.

As for a mage Qunari I could think up plenty of scenarios for how we could play as one. 2 tal-vashoth have a baby that turned out to be a mage, a 'Ketojan scenario' where someone helps the mage break out of her shackles, a young qunari getting orphaned before they are old enough to know of the Qun and I could go on but I'm just going to end it here.

No more than an Elven Arl of Amaranthine. Also we will be Tal'Vashoth, not followers of the Qun.

agree not a contradiction

We've never seen a female of that race so I am interested in what they look like. Not interested in playing one right after I get the game though.:wizard:

But that's the name of the race, is it not?

The First-Name, not that of the Following-Name.

You can rename something how you will, but that doesn't change what it is.

Qunari is a religion. AN elf can be Qunari.

Oh good lord. THIS argument again?

Look, the writers have said that qunari means BOTH the religion AND the race. Some people, however, still prefer to use the term kossith. The writers have stated that this isn't the term that they use but can't stop people from using it. Therefore, you can use either term as long as we all know that we are speaking of the horny giants (my new fav, btw).

That being said, why does every qunari thread devolve into an argument of semantics?

Back on topic, I think that a female qunari who doesn't follow the Qun wouldn't be contradictory as she's not a follower of the religion, which is what restricts the role of women.

Obviously some people didn't read the thread I linked to.
