Yeah, I groomed Garrus into quite the little renegade. He's much too useful to squander his talents in C-Sec.

I did the paragon options, got him to rejoin C-Sec and reapply for Spectre training, having taught him that if something is worth doing, it's worth doing right, and not stooping to the level of the people you're trying to stop.

Actually, I was a paragon, but got him to reapply for Spectre-hood anyway.

He reapplies to be a spectre whether or not he's turned renegade or paragon, the only difference is his ideology at the end of the game and the paragon decision to rejoin c-sec while he waits to become a spectre.
Personally, on all playthroughs except my heavy-renegade one I made him paragon. It's just so hard to corrupt the poor guy like that, and he's stll badass either way.

I put him on the neutrual seemed like it was right... should give him enough consideration to think what he's really going to do

then I am going to paragonize him in this game

I tried to make him neutral. I failed. So I just ended up making him paragon, which is also fine with me.

I don't think it will effect mass effect 2 that much to be honest.

Turned him paragon. I really don't wanted him to turn in a rage-driven killer.

I think it will be subtle things like the way he talks to Shep, his imput into missions, or the lines he calls out in battle, stuff like that

I made him Paragon. Otherwise he'd probably end up like Saren, killing many and not caring about as long as he gets the target killed. I don't like that kind of person so I told him that doing those things were bad.

I don't know exactly how I made him I would say neutral because I told him not to kill dr saleon if thats his name I can't remember but I did agree with him when he said if it comes down to we should kill saren straight away.

Paragon. The only renegade choices I agreed with were the interrogation and killing Saren.

Made him Paragon I suppose. Don't need another Saren running about. He did his job, ya, but the body count was ridiculous in Revelation alone.

The first time I played, I went with renegade options for Garrus because I thought it fit him more naturally. On my second play thru, however, I noticed that the line separating savior and villain was thin (Saren) so I decided to make Garrus paragon.

The way I think about it is that this way, Garrus's drive to get the job done will be tempered with the Paragon ways of negotiation and minimal loss of life.

Paragon. I tried convinced him to consider the long term effects of any action versus the getting immediate results.

Executor Pallin: Damn it Vakarian I want this done by the book!

Garrus: (Puts on shades) I dont play by your rules, man.

Executor Pallin: He's so cool.

So is Garrus a Spectre in ME2 if you convince him to join in ME1?

How exactly do you judge if he's become Paragon or Renegade though?

I always went with Paragon choices for him. Although sometimes it sounded somewhat... ambiguous. Like with Dr. Heart, Garrus asked me "what's the point? we killed him anyway", to which Paragon Shepard answers something like "it's your intent that counts", which could mean... yeah, it's all right, if you kill in self-defence... eh heh. See, playing Paragon really leaves you a lot of manoeuvring space.

You can just judge it from which way you take the conversations and his responces to it

Well, if you spoke with him enough to get the mission for Dr. Saleon choosing a "Goal at any cost" attitude you will shape him toward Renegade (easy since he already dis-liked being tied up in rules at C-Sec.
On the other hand if you pressed that 'how' you accomplished the mission was just as important as getting the job done you shaped him toward Paragon (somewhat harder as sometimes there was no 'right' way to get the job done till you had more points in charm)
