I personally was looking for an original si-fi setting game with a good story. I saw Crysis but I didn't have the rig to play it, and then I accidentally saw a tacticle combat tutorial vid on youtube about mass effect. I thought this game looks pretty cool and I'm gonna give it a try. Then it turned out to be my favorite game.
Back in Time, How did You Find out about Mass Effect?

you just cant go wrong with a 3rd person shooter, where you can customize your character, the story, and most of everything that goes into it.

Release day rolled around and I went to Best Buy... picked it up... and I've probably sunk more time into ME than any other non-MMO game.

I love what Bioware makes, what they do, what they stand for, and how they do business. My hat is off to them. As far as I'm concerned, Bioware has set the standard for RPG's and literally has no other competition otherwise in my personal choice of games.

My thoughts exactly. I've never been disappointed with a Bioware game that I've played. Never.
As for me, I've been a long-time Bioware fan (I started with them on Baldur's Gate), and I follow their releases quite closely. However, I got sucked into an MMO (Guild Wars) a few years before ME came out, and while I bought the PC version once it came out, I only started playing it about a month ago. Still, I reckon that puts me in a perfect position to finish ME1 and hop straight over into ME2.
