One would think that being a mage in a story about the templar/mage war would have a dramatic impact on how people treat you. But for some reason they all seem to treat you like a regular joe. The templars don't seem to be after me at all, like they are all the other apostate mages.
Does anyone know why this is? I find the lack of class specific content for the mage in this game disturbing, especially given the plot.

I'm afraid this is simply a symptom of the game being rushed. Mage-specific content would have required more time and resources than the developers could give it.
I do agree that it's very immersion-breaking - and is thus the singular reason mage was simply not an option for my canon Hawke.

Mage Hawke felt a little like a being a fake mage to me.
I get they didn't want to limit the player by not being able to use magic during the day and around certain people but it would have been nice to have consequences for behaviour in public. The option to tip Carver over the edge by reckless behaviour would have nice too.
For me being a mage is a pretty bland experience story wise. One cut scene that ignores Hawke's mage abilities and another cut scene rescuing a high level Templar by flinging magic spells around does not help either. Plus there is the staff that cannot be unequipped.
I do play a mage though and just add it to the list of things I don't like about da2 that I have learnt to ignore.

Yeah, DA2 was so rushed. Combat has balance problems, the AI is moronic, lack of mage specific content.
Good thing DA3 got another year development.
