And the Qunari are not like the traditional races in fantasy like the dwarves and elves, the Qunari are a bit of a twist against that tradition..
I'm stoked to play a Qunari exactly because of this. I find them a refreshing alterntive to the drunken, underground and tradition-bound mining dwarves and the beautiful questionably-immortal elves with affinity toward bows and magic. They're also not some sort of non-human/human hybrid (Charr/Khajiit, etc.). But I also like them because I am interested to see how exactly the world will respond to me. When I remember my first elven playthrough, I was actually surprised how many times my race came up in dialogue and I did feel put on the defense as the manipulator of an avatar which affected my character's responses. Learning that a Qunari playthrough will result in certain outcomes being particularly difficult makes this all the more interesting to me and I wonder what outcome I'll actually end up with. Will it be less than the ostensible "ideal?" Will it be the one my character desires? Will I, as a player, have to "settle?"
But while I'm optimistic that Thedas will respond to my race, I'm not so certain it will respond to my gender (which will be a woman). Even though, for example, the dialogue options for men and women are slightly different in DAO (and granted, I've never played through all the way as male or at all in DA2 as male) I doubt gender will come up much. Pity, though, as it seems that there is certainly a divide in cultural expectation across several races.
