I don't think they can or will top the epic saga that Shepard and the crew brought. They set the bar very high for themselves.
The new Mass Effect will not be about saving the galaxy I would assume, it will not revolve around some military guy and his crew, I would assume, and he won't be the best fighter/leader in the universe. Cause otherwise they might as well continue with Shepard.

So how will they live up to that? I don't think they will.

Being memorable is something we can only know after the fact. At which point, why would we assume the companions and protagonist were total strangers?

Why would you believe all of those things? About the only guaranteed one is the military guy part.

Saving the galaxy? Quite possible: maybe not from an existential threat like the Reapers, but it could be from some other threat or resolving a galactic conflict.

Crew? The next PC might not be military, but that doesn't mean he can't be kickass elite. Most of ME's companions weren't military yet were considered the elite. It's generally a implicit part of the companions- that they're exceptional people for an exceptional group.

Companions? Bioware has a decade of other games in which non-military protagonists had a group of companions. They'll remain as much of the focus as they generally have.

'Military guy with elite crew' is hardly the only way to tell a story, and the differences between military and, say, smuggler or mercenary or fight club champion or explorer or draftee or local hero or semi-divine figure can be the basis for stories that Shepard's archetype isn't suitable for.

It will be memorable if it is extremely good or extremely bad.

I don't ever think it will reach the status that the Mass Effect Trilogy has, I think it's always going to be compared to the Mass Effect Trilogy and probably won't be judge fairly just "this isn't as good as how it was in Mass Effect 1" or "the ending wasn't as bad as ME3's at least".

You want the the next installment to stand on its own two feet and not feel like a spin-off then become a forgotten game like Mass Effect: Galaxy.

Well the main issue is either way a sequel or prequel will still be hard to push forward no?

HonestlyI can't see them being able to recapture the magic or the family and camaraderie that shepard had with his or her crew and the Normandy I can't see this being able to work well with random people we never heard of?

What is everyone else thoughts do you think this new sequel or prequel  or midquel will be able to astound us or being as amazing as shepard was with the Normandy?

Shepard's crew was at some point a bunch of random people that we never heard off. For me this is a plus, it will bring back some of the sense of discovery and novelty from ME1 and 2. I want to meet new people in this universe. I want to experience it from a new perspective, see what else this universe can bring us. IMO, Javik is one of the most interesting character to talk to in ME3 because everything is new with him. James Vega is another example, but since he is another human military, it isn't exactly something new.

Anyway, ME universe is rich enough to be explored for a long time, but characters are better with a beginning and an ending, otherwise the interactions start to get repetitive and uninteresting. I already now a lot about this guys, I want to meet someone else.

I can't judge a game that doesn't even have traliers for it yet...

Here is the thing... making a reboot game "Better" than the original is SO much better than making it worse because at that point you kill the franchise and you may as well sell it to have some 2 man company.

Making it better is a better idea, cause not only do you successfully reboot the series you can end up getting people to buy the older ones as well. Making a flop will only marginally incress the sales of the previous as reviews will end up saying "Your better off getting Mass Effect 1-3"

That'll be hard to say until we actually play it, until then it will always seem like nothing holds up to the Shepard trilogy.

That being said, if it ends up feeling like a different universe like Halo 4 it'll most certainly be forgettable.

I think they can do a great job.  They just have to decide what they are aiming for.  They have the ability to write good stories, interesting dialogue and I've loved all of their characters.

Whether or not I'd pick it up would depend on the game itself, not what they did with the ME 1,2,3 series.

That said, I hope they do not ever do another series like ME with the same main character in each game.  One of the main reasons I hated the last part of ME 3  is because I had so many years to develop a connection to Shepard and the rest of the group.

If the ending to a new trilogy is ridiculous as the last then yes people will remember it.

Yes it is, if its same as old trilogy. Like same protagonist and your desicions affects on second and third game. Continuity was the greatest strenght of the series and i would hope they would not get rid of it, because it would be then just another scifi game.

Ive read 7 Harry Potter books and loved them all. I watched 8 Harry Potter movies and loved most of them.

I watched 6 Star Wars films and loved 3 of them.

I've read 4 Katniss Everdeen books and loved the first 2. I've watched 2 movies and loved them both.

My point here is that even though I love the main characters of a book or movie series (or video game) I may not love subsequent iterations or sequels.

It depends on the quality of the new material.

I won't judge the next ME game until I've played it.
