Hm, a terrible shame. I'm not sure why they didn't just make it faster, improve its damage, give it more knockback, or all three.

Not quite true. I think proponents of
melee weapons want to run around with spiky yellow hair and giant
buster swords and fight against long silver-haired men in trench coats
carrying katanas twice as big as their bodies. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/kissing.png[/smilie]

I want to do that in REAL LIFE. I'd kill for Cloud's implacable hair gel, too. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie]

But,
seriously. I just want a combat knife or a hatchet with a molecular
blade, or a set of kinetic barrier knuckle dusters if the animation
must be a punch for simplicity's sake.

Pretty sure the early concept art for ME had Saren with a Sword, I think it's in the art of Mass Effect somewhere, so obviously it was an idea at one point in production.

Why no melee weapons? Because this is the future and no one (except for those silly cloak wearing superheroes in the Star Wars universe) brings a knife/sword/katana/frying pan/sickle/axe to a gun fight.

That would be stupid

THis may ease your disappointment. a 3 punch attack towards humanoids.

As I've told others, address the real posts in this thread instead of spewing rhetorical hyperbole.

Because they're dumb and have no place in Mass Effect.

If you want silly melee weapons then you should go play JRPGs.

And like I said, strapping a bayonet on some of the guns wouldn't be completely out of line. But for the most part, no. It'd be pointless. You can already sock someone with your gun. There's really not much need to add more than that.

Particularly based on the comment in a book. That seemed to concentrate on patting someone on the shoulder, rather than rapidly thrusting or slashing at someone with a weapon, that still might be blocked by shields.

In the book, someone gets stabbed in the neck.

Page 12 of Ascension:

He held the weapon poised to strike, took a deep breath, then stabbed forward with the blade, slashing at an upward angle toward the soft spot in the skull just behind Keo's ear. It should have been a quick, clean kill. But his momentary hesitation cost him; it gave Keo a chance to sense the attack before it came. Reacting with a survival instinct honed over countless missions, she leaped from her seat, spinning to face her attacker even as the blade plunged home. Her incredible reflexes saved her from instantaneous death; instead of sliding smoothly up into her brain the knife buried itself deep in the flesh of her neck, where it stuck fast.

And do you know the relative damage of hitting someone in the face with a butt but compared to a knife? I'm totally in favour of only a bayonet, I suggested it earlier, actually.

That's why Soldiers nowadays, not protected by shields have bayonetts and knives, right?

For the third time now I will state that there is already a melee button that punches enemies, and all I want is for that button to be upgradeable, or at least be more than a simple punch.

Upgradable?

Assault Training, man. You ever read it's description? It upgrades it to 50% or more. You can further augment this with a exoskeletal armor upgrade and go around FALCON PAAAAUNCHing your way through the galaxy. Especially if you carry a pistol.

A soldier's knife is used mostly for it's utility.

If you'd take a look at, say, the US Army's M4/M16 rifle, you'd notice a distinct lack of a bayonet lug. This is because most of the time the foe ends up shot to death, due to the difficulty in getting into melee range in this day and age.

Melee combat is a rare occurance in modern warfare - it's trained for because a soldier must be ready for everything.

But that doesn't change that it happens rarely.

I would prefer keeping the ability to punch someone with a pistol in my hand than a knife.

I'd feel like an idiot charging at someone with an axe.

Uhh, most modern-equipped soldiers do NOT have bayonets. And the knives are almost entirely for show. The only reason they are made for combat is because must be prepared for anything at any time, as any DI would tell you.

A soldier doesnt attack a gun-armed enemy with a knife. Period.

they did, for a while. the DEVs in ME2 experimented with a knife i think but they found it useless in every situation so they got rid of it. hell it was taken out without anyone noticing until like a month later - they just never used it

How many times did you end up in Graysons position in ME1? Point rests. Your a foot soldier, the only melee you need is rifle-butting and pistol-whipping if your that close. An assassin uses a knife because its quiet and effective when you need to surprise, not when your charging a battlefield.

Yes. I was keenly aware of this talent and the Combat Exoskeleton, as the only class I ever beat the game with was Soldier. It's an awesome talent and the CE's are awesome mods. In Normal difficulty and at lower levels. Unfortunately, with the way enemy HP scales as you go up in level and difficulty, melee quickly became pointless in ME1. The shotgun more reliably knocked enemies down, and did exponentially greater damage.

All I'm asking is that melee be able to compete. I don't want a buster sword. I just want a melee attack that can kill a krogan or geth destroyer when it gets in my face. Or, alternatively, if I get in ITS face with a Charge.

Well afaik almost every enemy in ME2 wears armor, and I imagine armor would provide enough protection to drastically reduce the effectiveness of a knife. Beyond that a knife would probably be useless against certain species due to their unique anatomy. I.E. Krogan, Klixen, Vorcha, Mechs, Collectors, and Thresher Maws.

Krogan are naturally durable, it's true, but the codex covers this. They can be harmed by melee weaponry. It'd just take a molecular blade to deal any significant damage. If it can hurt a krogan, it can sure as hell hurt just about anything else.

All I want is the ability to punch someone in the ribs or kick them in the chest before blasting them with a shotgun.

A punch and a kick is a hell of a lot better than a rifle butt when it comes to gameplay, but that's just my opinion.

The problem with attacking a Krogan with a knife is that a) they'll very likely survive and B) most Krogan are strong enough to kill a human being with just a punch or two. Or, at the very least, make you regret stabbing them.

I think a combat knife as a side-arm should be allowed. Its practical and fits lore-wise. I'd love DLC or ME3 to expand on melee.

Isn't this the exact same problem attacking a krogan with the butt of your gun has, only a riflebutt is about a hundred times less likely to kill a krogan?

All I'm asking for is a melee attack that can effectively kill things that get in my face. There's already a melee button. Make it upgradeable.

True however, even with a molecular blade there is a chance that all you do is ****** the krogan off and end up with your skull caved in. Furthermore the klixen and collectors have an unknown anatomy so what may work on most species may be absolutely useless, and in a situation like that I the last thing I want is to wonder if stabbing the species in question is going to result in my immediat dismemberment. And short of severing the limbs on the loki mechs I can hardly see a blade being effective.

See above. We already have a riflebutt button, and that'd be even less effective than a blade. I just want a melee ability that works, and can be upgraded.

I don't really look at is a melee button so much as a 'You're in my face, far too close to use my weapon effectively, so I'll smash you in the head with it, instead' weapon.
