Do BioWare writers/developers still consider BSN to be "toxic"?

I've seen a few tidbits of civility here and there. it's mostly overlooked as people not being civil tend to make more noise.

What is it about game forums that people that don't like a game feel compelled to post? If I don't like I game I won't bother going to the forum for that game. Why would I? I only visit forums for games I am actively playing and enjoy.

It's quite simple, although Dreamgazer is no doubt going to whine at me for explaining it.

People here at powerless. We all are. We have no control whatsoever over whether BioWare produces a product that delights us, or frustrates us and disappoints us.

So we have a lot of very powerless, very helpless people frustrated and angry at BioWare for not giving them the product they wanted. They have a lot invested in the stories, and they feel betrayed and abandoned.

Nobody likes being under the power of someone they feel resentful towards. So what they do? They attempt to convince themselves they hate the game or no longer care about it or whatever. Because if they can do that, they're free. BioWare no longer has any control over them. So they come on here and whine and rant and make up ridiculous nonsense. Don't be fooled - the person they're actually trying to convince is themselves.

Seboist and Heretic Hanar are by far the most pathetic, but there's shades of it in quite a few people. Just helpless people trying to assert an illusion of power.

There was a lot of complaining on the DAO forums when that game was released, but that DA Toolset empowered players to rewrite the whole story and ruleset if they wanted to, so I'm not sure this analysis is correct. Maybe it's because players have no control of the "cannon" version of the fiction?

I personally believe that the BSN has calmed down since the Mass Effect 3 issues, but there is still a toxicity that is common on any developer board and personally I am fine with them wanting to stay away from it. Maybe an "improved BSN" will make the boards better, but I can't see that happening until bans are something beyond a joke.

If players could forget about or ignore things they dislike in a story by 'headcanon' or mods or whatever, they would do so. They can't, and so haven't.

Instead of "like" button we can get a "toxic" button which, for a given user, puts a thread in your profile's "toxic" category off the main board.:)

Hell, many of the things I might find disagreeable are probably due to fan input more than developer power. This is the first game that took a lot of feedback from BSN, and from the "statisitics data" you upload in ME2. ME1 and ME2 were developed more in a vacuum, where they relied more on themselves and just came up with things and just hoped the ideas stuck. The whole ME2 squad is kind of a reflective of this process. A character for just about every trope and taste. Hudson was proud at the time about a character like Jack. He didn't think many teams would take their chances on characters like that. He specifically said he'd knew she'd be hated, and it'd only be rewarding if you gave her a chance.

I still can't even begin to fathom what makes you come to a forum if you hate the game.

I just go play another game I do like.

@ Psychevore: Yep. You don't see me hanging around on TES boards. Although I'm not sure I'm interested enough in Oblivion to actually hate it. (I'll start hating Skyrim when the price comes down a bit)

It doesn't seem like there are many here who hate the game anyways. It's not worth wondering why they're still around. From what I can tell, the majority of critics don't hate the game. They hate parts of it. Sometimes it's not even as predictable as the ending. I dislike Priority Earth more than the ending myself.

I'm happy with just saying Oblivion is ugly as hell, and leaving it at that.

The environments and armor do. I just can't stand the faces actually. Glad that was improved a bit in Skyrim.

I used a lot of face, hair, skin & replacer mods to get oblivion looking more to my taste. that's sort of what you do with tes games.

or somehow bat s*#t crazy stuff like IT still being discussed.

Oh, heaven forbid. What is the world coming to.

I couldn't care less about IT, but I doubt it's something BW considers "toxic", and if they do, then they're overly sensitive and deserve to have their jimmies rustled.

I've only had their games on Xbox. Even Morrowind on the first Xbox. heh

I personally like Oblivion more than Skyrim, because of the setting. Snow is fun to be in IRL, but not so much in a game like that. Plus, Oblivion feels more...modern. The world, the times. And of course Skyrim is just dirty, everything's dirty.

Skyrim's TES updates combined with Oblivion's...art style, I'd say, would be a great game.

bioware gets what they deserve, and i feel little sympathy for them. we all have jobs and sometimes we dont do a good enough job. when i do a bad job, i hear about it. same goes for bioware.

unless you can unmake ME3, why would it change?

After everything said about Mac Walters, I am not surprised that he doesn't come here to talk to people. No real loss though, I wouldn't want to talk to that dork anyways.

I think even a lot of those who come here often consider it to be somewhat "toxic" considering any thread despite of its intent usually gets derailed into a "screw ME3! The ending is hilariously bad! Synthesis is an abomination, what were they thinking?" thread

I often see myself going here one day looking for news or interesting topics, post a comment in whatever I feel like participating in and then usually it's days before I write something again because... excuse me, but I feel like some people in here can make my eyes roll especially those who needlessly analyse MEU to the point where they're just overanalyzing something that was never even intended to be anything special in the first place.

Oh god I miss the pre-ME3 days where I didn't feel like arguing over this franchise. Back then it was all good for me and if something made me laugh because it was dumb or stupid I just laughed and moved on. That Saren/Sovereign final boss in ME1? Screw that, man, it's just a decent video-gamey bossfight that belongs in a video game... ME2's terminator...? Screw that too, it's just a decent VG boss fight that resolves the climax of the gameplay along with the rest of the suicide mission... and then came ME3 where Bioware suddently wanted that stuff gone because 1) apparently the people behind me and a lot of other fans went in whining over the stupidity of ME2's final boss and 2) Bioware/Casey suddently believes that because gaming can be "art" or ME3 is a "movie", excuse me, "THE movie of the franchise" that there can't be a video-gamey boss at the end.

They also decided to screw Harbinger in ME3 because he was "too cheesy" or something, probably also according to a lot of fans who whined during Post-ME2-Release stuff as well.

Why Bioware... WHY did you have to go so wrong with ME3? Were it not because made some stupid decisions by yourselves or had them forced upon you by EA's By-The-Numbers BS, it was because fans wanted you to try harder but as a result you've divided your fanbase by a large margin.

Yes this forum is still friggin "toxic". Why else would it be that I can have a nice day, then sit at my laptop and spontaneously go to this site for the 100th time and my mood is instantly ruined. A bad mix of bad memories, overzealous people and awful evolvement of the Bioware company... or EA/Ware.

How I miss everything pre-ME3!  /rant
