Mass Effect: First Contact Discussion Thread

The first contact war would be an excelent setting for the next mass effect imo but it's not without it's problems as a setting. Here is a place for anything first contact war related. Here are my thoughts just to get the ball rolling:

1) Weapons, Powers and Classes

On a practical level there are a few problems with the First Contact War as a setting aside from the obvious being that it only lasted a few days if my memory serves correctly.

Given the huge technological leap backwards for humanity (from even ME1) in terms of weapons, armor and especially tech powers (e.g. no tech armor, energy drain, etc) and remembering that Humanity wouldn’t start experimenting with biotics for years (no biotics) the classes and powers available would be terribly restricted compared to ME3 at least from a human perspective, Turians no so much.

Given that Turians in theory would have access to superior weapons, armors, powers, fleet and troop numbers this would be a real David and Goliath struggle for humanity. So what early percursor versions of weapons might we see from humanity during the first contact war period[?]:

Human Weapons:
Predator, Carnifex, Lancer/Avenger, Mattock, Argus, Katana, Scimitar, Mantis, Viper, Locust (possibly) and Revenant (possibly).

Turian Weapons:
Phaeston, Krysae, Tempest (ERCS), Vindicator (ERCS), Shuriken (Elkoss Combine), etc. I believe we have only scratched the surface with regard to the turian armory and it’s possible that turians likely have access to weapons from the other species as well such as the Claymore, Acolyte, etc.

2) Enemy and World Variation

Another thing to consider would be the lack of enemy and world variation. The first contact war was a purely Human and Turian affair as far as we are aware and I can imagine facing down waves and waves of Turians would get a little boring after a while, especially if the conflict is largely confined to the same world (Shanxi). I could image it might feel like a bit like 1,000 continuous waves on Firebase: Condor against nothing but marauders. Perhaps BioWare could break-up the marauderthon shooting-gallery monotony by allowing the player to switch perspectives to either the turians or humans so you’re not just shooting turians all day, but humans too and getting a different perspective on Turian and Human culture and the conflict. Perhaps we might finally get to see Palaven in some form, the citadel eventually and Arcturus Station or whatever the Alliance had as a base of operations at that point in time.

So what kind of turian opponents might be in-store for us? How about early Turian Ghosts (turian hunters), Havocs (turian dragoons) and Cabal vanguards (turian phantoms)… does that whet your pallet, yet? Along with the usual suspects the traditional Turian soldiers, sentinels and engineers of course. Turians could have sentry turrets, combat drones, sniping units, etc. Basically what i’m saying is BioWare could use the ME3 multiplayer factions as a template and take the best qualities of Cerberus, Geth, Reapers and Collectors to create a Turian faction. There’s also the possibility of meta-turians from ME: Evolution (turian collectors).

What would a human faction offer? Humans probably had quite a few early tanks and makos of their own which would offer some challenge and take some fire-power to bring down. Humans could be more of a guerrilla faction, a rag-tag bunch of bad-asses, good with explosives and good at close range and in orchestrating killzones; who don’t need fancy toys to take back this rock.

3) Returning Characters

I would really like to see Anderson play a major role here in a first contact war game, perhaps as the game’s human protagonist. Alternatively maybe you could have a choice of different protagonists in anderson’s unit from different classes. Saren may or may not be a spectre at this point; perhaps this is where he earns his title setting the stage for Mass Effect. In my opinion Saren is the best villain-come-anti-hero in the series and this would be an excellent opportunity to bring him back as an excellent counter-point to Anderson as the game’s Turian protagonist / secondary antagonist from humanity’s perspective. After all his brother is the Turian General at Shanxi Desolas Arterius. Imagine Anderson and Saren on the box-art… wouldn’t that be awesome?  Might we also get to see Hackett, Kahoku, Banes, John Grissom, General Williams. A cameo from a certain young man called Jack Harper and his girlfriend Eva Core. There are a lot of story possibilities here.

4) Multiplayer

Humans vs Turians co-operative death-matches and capture-the-flag would be a fantastic addition and an absolute no-brainer for the series. Perhaps BioWare could offer a traditional horde-mode as well as a number of new modes along with greater match customization options. Perhaps the lack of different races could be countered by greater personal customization options, such as introducing deep facial, body and armor customization options, etc. Maybe as the Alliance starts to grow desperate they hire mercenaries in the area with grudges against the turians to help them in their perilous fight (e.g. Krogans, Batarians, Vorcha). The Turians could apply for help from the council for reinforcement from the Salarians and Asari.

Pretty sure the Vindicator is of Turian origin. Avenger and Lancer together makes no sense - the Avenger is a later model (post-2183) of the Lancer.

Some of the other guns you listed possibly didn't come into service until after 2183, too. I'm sure they could make "older versions" of some of the guns though.

As for plot... if they do go for a prequel -which I hope they don't- then I would like to see more than just the First Contact War. What if the player was involved in something that nobody to this day knows about, some secret mission of some sorts? Maybe this could even lead into a sequel in the future or something. But I don't just want a story about something I already know everything about if we're getting a prequel.

You're right about the vindicator -I just checked it's made by a Turian company ERCS so I put it under Turian weapons. I reckon there could be a ME3 style lancer that replenished it's ammunition as an alternative to the avenger style weapon that used standard ammunition.

All guns worked on the heat-based system that ME1 had before ME2. No guns in a prequel would use thermal clips. The Avenger didn't exist before 2183, as far as we're aware.

The lore regarding thermal clips is a bit iffy to say the least. I reckon some would use thermal clips some would use regular old bullet/clips. I listed those weapons as more of a visual aid to paint of picture of human weapons tech at that point in time. I'd expect mainly precursors to those weapons.  I reckon guns in a first contact war prequel would still have more of their own character than the copy-paste ones from ME1. If you had a choice between ME2 avenger and ME3 lancer I don't think anybody would care that the lancer is older because it kicks the avenger's ass.

I'm just saying - should probably take Avenger out of the list because it didn't exist during the First Contact War :P

And the lore behind thermal clips isn't really iffy. Everyone used the old heat-based system, up until after the Geth's attack on the Citadel. The Geth had been using thermal clips - and so everyone else copied them because it seemed to be more efficient.

The Avenger is Volus made. I think the Alliance only uses it now because Elkoss Combine probably offered some shady bulk purchase deal.

I don't think that First Contact war, Rachni war or Krogan uprising are good setting for new game. These events would be better material for some "historical" book from ME universe, because such events are better to describe from more then one angle (main hero).

I would prefer smaller, previously unknown events or something from Cold batarian war.

It's still a plot convenient back-story dump. I seriously doubt all the weapons in an early prequel would have regenerating ammo; it would just feel really silly after ME2 & 3.

They should have never used the Geth explanation. It's a blatant retcon and would be better off seen as such.

They should have just used the hybrid system like they planned to, with options to enable forcing one playstyle or the other. Their decision to do a full conversion was the biggest mistake of ME2, to me.

I suspect a game of the First Contact War would be much different than we're used to--I imagine it being set up more like a traditional FPS, with no-to-minimal RPG elements. Basically, ME does something as close to Halo as they could get. That's why I don't think it's high on their list for things to do--the RPG/FPS blend, even with as toned down as it got in 2 and 3, was the defining mechanical part of ME.

I actually posted a 'fan written trailer' on a completely different forum, made for fun. I'll post it not so much for shameless advertising, but more for convenience's sake of displaying the idea I had for ME 4/NEXT.

In comparison with real video trailers, these trailers can appear slow and bland, but I’ll try to add music pieces and vivid descriptions (so far that I can do that) do give you an idea of an ‘epic’ trailer I thought up. Hopefully, it comes across as epic, along with the future game.

Fandom: Mass Effect

Subject: Mass Effect 4?

‘The First Contact war has been going on for three months now (note: I thought I read that somewhere, or made a guess) and the ruthless lizardheads have conquered Shanxi. Humanity puts a valiant fight against the alien invaders until one day all hostilities are put to a halt…’

Several soldiers are eyeing the slopes of the barren world they are fighting on, looking for any enemies. Suddenly, a small ship that is without question not one of theirs tries to land and one of the soldiers asks their commanding officer:

“Should we shoot it?”

The officer shakes his head and watches as the ship lands no more than a few yards away. Its technology seems quite advanced. Out of the strange vehicle a blue-skinned alien woman appears in unusual stretch-fabric fashion and says:

“Ready to climb aboard?”

Edit: Faulty link, damn it!

Cue music. As there is no confirmed piece that fits Mass Effect 4 perfectly, I tried to select something that came quite close. ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeY_L5EDLGs ; epic pieces (that aren’t already attributed to existing works) are greatly appreciated in the comments.

The soldiers jump from left to right to look out the windows as they enter a lush environment set on a rotating white structure that looks like a giant acropolis. The commanding officer remains calm and asks the blue woman who is conversing with her pilot, a blue woman as well:

“Where are you taking us, Miss…”

The blue woman smiles and says: “I’m not exactly a woman.”

‘The first human sets foot on the citadel…’

The commanding officer steps off the ship and looks around at the buzzing of what seems like a dozen races.

“Wow,” he says.

‘And makes quite a splash.’

The commanding officer gets knocked over by one of the lizardheads.

“Watch it, you… a human?!” it yells before lunging as the blue woman intervenes.

‘Their alien adversaries stand in their way.’

“The Turian Hierarchy will never allow this!” a ‘turian’ yells in a council room with other races as well as the commanding officer who’s there as a guest.

‘But humanity will prove…’

A spaceship gets attacked by an off-screen assailant as they engage in a devastating space battle.

‘That they…’

“Everyone’s unconscious, what do we do now, captain Hudson?” a soldier asks.

‘Are going to…’

“We stand and fight,” the commanding officer named Hudson responds.

‘Leave their mark…’

In a third-person perspective captain Hudson picks up a weapon that looks far more advanced than his own sidearm and proceeds to shoot at something that was sneaking up on him. Lights flash as he fights his way through the corridors. In the next scene, he brings down a mech almost singlehandedly and its pilot asks: “What are you?”

‘And the universe will never be the same.’

“The best humanity has,” Captain Hudson retorts, shooting out a strange clip from the gun he just mastered.

‘Mass Effect: Humanity’s Wake’.

‘Guesses’: it sees the rise of humanity and details how they went from newbie race to an unexpected force on the field that shouldn’t be underestimated as they rapidly expand, learn tactics and expand on technology and add to it in a never before seen rate and they prove their value in battles and other conflicts, but with an overarching plot (NOT the Reapers).

If you're referring to Casey Hudson, or anyone else, I didn't know any of the names of the people that worked on Mass Effect when I thought up that trailer, so it's a coincidence:p the name can be changed to something else. Hudson seemed like the closest symbolic name I could think of (I liked the character of Hudson in Black Ops or at least his name, so borrowed it:p)

As I was reading through your post I started picturing casey hudson wearing a space marine outfit and had a good chuckle.

I'd rather see a sequel as a prequel greatly limits player agency in an RPG. Since the First Contact War already has a canon chain of events and outcome, there would be no room for the player character to influence world events in a way that deviates from what has already been established. There also wouldn't be any room for the writers to pull off surprises. Anyone who has played through the Shepard trilogy is going to know that the Council is going to step in at the 11th Hour, and bring about a cease fire before the war escalates beyond a border skirmish.

The war being a border skirmish also creates some issues. Besides the much smaller sectting and the absence of other alien factions, total casualties for the Turians did not exceed 2,000 IIRC. The Alliance suffered slightly less. Halfway through the game a single protagonist would have gunned down half the KIA totals for the entire 'war.'

That's definitely true on a meta-plot-level. But I'm sure there are a number of personal stories that bioWave could tell/weave from soldiers on both sides with their own unique perspectives and experiences during this conflict a bit like ODST that I would find interesting. What would effect you more in reality... losing the war which is an inevitability or fighting to keep your freinds alive and unexpectedly losing your best friend?

I am not sure that a prequel is the way to go on this. I mean if you want to do a prequel over events that were previously unknown that would be different, but on something that definitely has every detail planned out you are going to be hard pressed to make an effective rpg game.

and if the 11 hour, only 2000 turian kia thing is true then the game would be near impossible

Well yeah, I saw the issue with the short, kinda boring and already chronicled First Contact war and thought 'How about showing wat comes after, humans rising as a new species and some unknown events causing them to make a name for themselves, with our new protagonist spearheading that.' My 'trailer' is the result of my thoughts:p

A sequel has all the advantages of 'unknown things to introduce' that a prequel struggles with, even if you don't take the Metacon War or the Rachni wars or anything else we already know the outcome of... But ME3's endings and scale make a sequel... hard, to be brief, as probably everyone has gone over the problems with a post-ME3 game in their head already.

Yeah, it was just a few months skirmish between human patrols and colony garrison against turian patrols.

Only once there was a major military operation, which lasted only a single day.

While there was a danger for war to escalte to a major conflict, since turians started to approve mobilization after Shanxi liberation, Council intervined for peace.

Bassically, it would be a very boring and short game.

At most, FCW could be used as a prologue of a game but that's it.
