I am having a problem voting. When I click the button to select my option to vote for, it just goes into Please Wait and never leaves it.

<cringing...>

I've managed to lose a day on the Vault :-/ And the last 26 votes.
An ordinary (looking) little update to Drupal corrupted the db, requiring me to roll it back to the last daily backup.

If you are not sure whether your vote was counted, please vote again. Don't worry about duplicate votes, as it's one per user/IP address.

How would technomancy differ from ordinary high tech? Or is it just a weird science look?

i think of technomancy as steam punk but more magic involved. like a gun that could shoot magic missiles would be technomancy

If one was to go by the old meanings of words then Technomancy is any form of divination (which is what the *mancy* part of the word means) that utilises technology. However since the '90's certain authors have chosen to put a different meaning to the word as a whole (see the wikipedia page for Technomany).

In my opinion, magic, and technology or science; Are opposite terms, and hardly could coexist in The same Universe.

For example In The Game "Arcanum of steamworks and magick obscura" you have magic, and steam technology but they are opposite powers, they can't work together and usually if both are conbined it would cause dangerous consecuences. So Arcanum NPCs have to chose the way of the magic or the way of technology....

Without having read that wiki article, I can think of 2 approaches to picture technomancy. One would be set in a world where magic is just consequence of the underlying physics of that world, sort of like chemistry is in our world. Technomancy would then be simply applied science.

The other approach would be that it isn't really magic at all, but advanced technology. The technology we have today would appear to be magic to people from only a couple centuries ago.

You're certainly entitled to that opinion, but it is not supported by the D&D rules. Any sort of item can be enchanted by magic in D&D/D20 rules. There's absolutely nothing preventing you from having an assault rifle +3 or a Flaming Burst antimatter rifle +5.

There are several settings, such as the classic Blackmoor setting, created by D&D co-creator Dave Arneson, which have magic and technology coexisting. This version of Blackmoor was also part of the classic Mystara setting as well, though in its distant past. Then there's D20 modern, which has magic existing in the modern-day Earth. There's also the classic Greyhawk module Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, written by Gary Gygax, where the dungeon is a crashed spaceship filled with robots and aliens. Dragon Magazine also ran an article called "Greyhawk 2000", about the Greyhawk setting 1500 years in the future, comparable to 21st century Earth, with high-technology enhanced by magic. So as far as D&D is concerned, magic can (and does) exist in the same universe as technology.

The catch is that societies that focus on one area rarely focus on the other. There's little need to develop a CAT scan machine or vaccines when every cleric can cast remove disease or heal. Likewise, if you're technologically advanced enough to produce a machine gun, a magic missle spell is kind of a joke.

Having said all of that, however, I voted on the Dinosaurs option, because I have a use for that more than I would have a use for technomancy. :lol:

I disagree. Technology is usually made up of mundane things, you can use magic on mundane things. You can also use magical things to make technology, or just some magical components.

@Bluebomber4evr:
Well when I have said "same universe" maybe I should said "at the same time", also I was talking about advanced technology, not something like a sword, etc.

However you are right, about D&D and D20 modern; But for me it's too bizarre combine high technology, like a spaceship or a machinegun, with magic.

Having said this, I have voted for "Elemental Planes Stuff", because I have some ideas for that.

@Sumthing:

Such mundane things like send a man to the Moon, or decodifying human genome.

"use magical things to make technology?". Well only If you agree, that they could coexist at the same time. In "Arcanum" trying to do that probably will cause that the machine explodes.

However I just, are saying my opinion, I don't want to offend anybody...

Not necessarily. Some magic spells could be way more powerful than almost all technological weapons. I think the upside with technology in most settings is, you make it, and it doesn't make you tired or use energy or stuff, and some magical items just crumble into nothing after a certain number of uses, but technology doesn't, and can be repaired, and recharged much easier. Also, some creatures require magic to kill, and I guess there are probably some creatures that require mundane weapons to kill.

I'm just saying thats a way that magic +technology can be implemented in a campaign setting that way and I would enjoy, or think that implementation of it was good. Not sure how someone gets offended by talking about a fantasy campaign setting.

Ah, I see. It looks like the current poll let's you vote more than once if you change your IP or vote-login-vote. I just voted a 2nd time (after I tallied the votes above) after logging out of the new Vault. We'll have to see about changing that behavior.
