I've been trying to put some long hair on my Shepard for a longer time now and already had success in ME2 and ME3 [ If you're interested, check my ME3-Thread : social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/368/index/17694583/1#17737458 ]
As far as i know, there's only one way of editing ME1-hair : Hexedit.
I tried it with this tutorial femshep.ning.com/forum/topics/mass-effect-1-hair-editing-tutorial
But this is the only result i get:

No matter which hairstyle i try on Maleshep, it always changes the haircolour from dark brown to blonde and apparently just "removes" the mesh.
if you scroll down on the tutorial, there's a picture of a male Shepard with a Mohawk who originally head the "formalspike" haircut.
My original Hair is "Short03", so i replaced every "Short03" with "Mohawk" and every "Short" with "Mhk" and it gave me the result my screenshot shows.
After that, i tried replacing Short03 it with "Ponytail" instead of Mohawk and "Ptl" instead of "Mhk".
Well, i got the same result as before, no Ponytail, just some kind of eminem-hair...
If anyone knows how to get the "Ponytail" working on maleshep, please help
