Shouldn't the mage templar war be horribly one sided?

@al0u: Asunder shown clearly that the recent events have changed at least partially the opinion of the common folks about mages since DA2. The templars will probably gain more support than you think.

Until a band of Red Templars (which your average joe isn't going to know the difference) somes along and destroys their village.

Oh, and yes it has been a few years since Kirkwall, but I think everyone needs to remember the Chantry didn't go away (that I know of), they're stilll preaching, and a large percentage of the populuce still believe in the Maker and are most likely going to church. If our world has taught us anything, it's that religion is a very powerful tool and can be used to (for good or ill) manipulate a lot of people. Priests talk, especially if they are unified in the message, and people will listen (let's exclude the Dalish and those that follow the Qun :P )

It depends. We don't know yet how much the red templars are known in the common public. I'd wait until we have more info before saying anything on the matter, though I do believe that the templars will be affected negatively by the red templars.

If we're going to try and argue 'realism' then the Templars covered in metal would all instantly be killed by one mage who would electrocute them all in three seconds. In a realistic situation it would take almost no effort at all for a group that can shot lightning out of their hands to kill group of walking lightning rods.

Well not if they have own magic that turn off lighting or just neutralize that.

I was unaware the Templars can think faster than electricity. Since the Templar magic nullification has always been portrayed as a conscious effort they'd all have to think faster than the mage or they'd all instantly die.

Not to mention that 'realistically' mages wouldn't be physically weak unarmored people. They'd all be like the Tevinter mages who are armored up just like their Templar counterparts. Since 'realistically' there's nothing stopping a mage from also working to become physically strong or wearing armor. Ever mage should 'realistically' be an arcane mage because there's nothing actually stopping a mage from being able to do everything a mundane can do plus magic.

Well as far i renember lyrium gives templars higher resistance on magic as well their equipment besides mage need time to cast spell.Well most mages live in circles so i doubt they are physicaly on good level i don't mention that arcane warrior have even worse with templar as they fight in close combat what gives templars even more capabilities and well last arcane warrior is the warden (if he was a mage)  .

@al0u: we don't know what exactly the Chantry wants to do. They might still want to find a compromise between the two groups.
Beside, if some of the common folks are anti-mages, they might be convinced that the Chantry is following the wrong path. While religion is a powerful tool, the templars could use it as well. Remember that they separated themselves from the Chantry, not the religion.

***************************************SPOILERS***********************************

I have to disagree, based on the Asunder example. If you are referencing the incident that I believe you are, then the common folk were reacting to the assassination attempt on the Divine, not necessarily in reference to the events in DA2. And even then, I don't think that the reaction provoked is out of the ordinary. People fear magic in part because they don't understand sh*t about it.

@eluvianix: I didn't mean that DA2 final event changed the perspective. I meant that it seems to have changed a bit from what Cullen stated in DA2.
It's true that the particular even you mentioned is indeed the reason of the hostility, but I do think that the event in Kirkwall have caused some negativity for the mages, though of course there is no basis to support it.

They might lose the help of the religion if the Chantry distanced themselves from or even disavow the renegade Templars. In that sense, the Chantry holds the upper hand. I can easily see Justinia trying to do that, as she tries to do some major damage control.

I agree that the Chantry's has the upper hand, though I'm not sure on what Justinia will do. And that's without considering the Chantry's situation. While it seems from what Bioware said that it'll survive the initial event, we don't know if and how it'll be damaged.

Well oddly enough the two aspects the Chantry is most well known for, err physical real aspects obviously Andraste and the Chat are pretty big lol, have both up and gone rogue on the Chantry. That should cause some very interesting reactions among the populace when just the Chantry itself is discussed. Curious to see how well writen it is.

I don't know... I could use "the First Enchanter of Kirkwall turned into a huge abomination and tried to eat the face off of every Templar that opposed him" to get myself some pretty big sympathy and support... the right person would have to be telling it though... is there a Rasputin-esque leader capable of enthralling the masses within the Templars or Chantry?

I'd have to talk about Asunder to respond, but I prefer not to, since it might be considered spoiler and you have to read the book.
