All I mean is that we already know that there are some coming back, it's a small cast, and we know that Bioware likes returning characters.  So you might be disappointed.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. It wouldn't really be a game breaker for me; I would just be disappointed. Really, it's just a small request from a fan. If they feel that they need to bring back old characters, then that's what they'll do.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I agree with you 100%.  New PC = New companions if you ask me... I'd rather not have any returning characters.  Cassandra is fine, since, as MasterScribe mentioned, she's never traveled with us or interacted with our PCs in any way.

Yeah, I feel the same. I just want the new adventure to really feel fresh. For what it's worth, at least Cassandra looks like a pretty cool character, all knocking down gates and stuff.

Hopefully the returning cast will play a more important role than the cameos that lasted a few minutes.

I can imagine cullen, morrigan and lelian being pretty important npcs giving you quests and such in order convince them to join your cause...hopefully

Varric is alright, Cassandra hasn't been a companion before so she's a new person for ne, could care less about Cullen tbh. Those are the only two (cullen and varric) returning characters that its like meh. I'm really excited about the other new companions though like the grew warden and funny jazz hands mustache man. So I would prefer new characters but I kinda dont care if we get old ones?

Old characters provide a connection to the games.

Cameos are a waste of time and when they are added its usually to crack some lame ass joke that was never funny to begin with and its even worse when said character was meant to be the funny man varric is a good example.

Yeah, that's fine. It's really a matter of taste. I mean, who knows, maybe the returning characters will be awesome in DAI. We won't know til we get the game. Though, this request is just coming from how I felt they did in DA2 with returning characters.

I'm right there with you but it already seems like it's heading towards a cameo filled cheese-fest. Varric, Cassandra, Vivienne are all pre existing characters who are party members and Cullen was rumored as well. Then you have Morrigan who will be important and Leliana who will probably also be important, Sten (turned Arishok) is rumored to be in it, and there will probably be enough short cameos or quests filled with regurgitated one liners (swooping is bad, who iz ziz MAN TeaGAN?! Etc...) to make your head spin if DA 2 and ME3 are anything to go by.

:(

How about we play the game first before judging it?

Yeah, I did that with ME3 and DA2 and it didn't turn out well for me. Even after i played the demos and thought "huh...this actually sucks" I told myself it was just a demo and the real game would be good. I was wrong. I choose not to ignore the red flags and confirmed features that I don't like this time.

Fair enough. That's what we should all do. But I'm not sure what red flags you're referring to in the context of two (or three) returning characters as companions.

That, in and of itself, means nothing.

Returning characters: Leliana, Morrigan, Varric, Cassandra
Rumored: Sten, Shale, Cullen, Bodahn and Sandal (almost certainly due to Bodahn's statements in DA2)

It's not just characters returning as companions that bothers me, BioWare so far has made almost every cameo/returning character very corny and unappealing to me. Part of what made ME1 or DA:O so awesome was all the original, deep, interesting characters who's actions and dialogue made sense in the context which it occurred. The cameos reduced these characters to one of their lines ("hold the line!" "swooping is bad" etc...) or personality traits at the cost of all depth (ex: Oghren in DA:A). Cameos themselves are a red flag for me after all that.

I expect the same number of returning characters that were in DA:2, which is three Cassandra, Varric, and Probably Cullen.

Although I hope they bring some of the same archetypes in the new characters, A possessed character(Wynne, Justice, Anders), a love-able sex maniac(Zeveran, Isebella), and the sterotypial fantasy version of the race(Oghren, Oghren, Merrill).

The Idea that one of the "Warriors" would be a greater pride demon in the body of a Mabari would be brilliant. in my humble opinion

I'm going to have to agree with this.  We were told that Dragon Age is about Thedas, so why can't each game be self-contained in terms of main characters?  Ideally we'd just have a few major events carrying over from game to game so that the world itself underwent certain changes, and the only returning characters we saw were royalty, important religious figures, a very small number of important military figures, etc.  Meeting characters you've seen before is jarring, because now you need to treat them like new characters in spite of what you already know about them... if people even bother to do that.  Admittedly, there are probably many who do not.

When I see a long list of returning characters, it makes me wonder why we need to switch protagonists in the first place.

Oh yes. I was so angry at Bioware for completely reversing any character development he had in DAO and making him a drunken bumbling idiot again in DAA, just for cheap laughs. Not to mention what they did with Anders...

That's why I didn't want Varric back in DAI. I don't like having characters just for the sake of fanservice, and I don't want his character to be Ander-fied.

No player character has ever met Cassandra prior to DAI, so she is "new." Technically.

And of course, Vivienne is new.

I'll admit, I have no freaking clue why Varric needs to be in this game.

To be honest, some of the "returning" characters we have seen until today, had very little in common with their "old" self.

Merril was next to invisible with almost nothing memorable about her, and I'm not sure I would have remembered meeting Isabella if not for a certain off-screen event that she triggered...

Highlighted are the cameos to Party Members I liked in DA2, I never got the Cullen fascination nor did I "Get" the love for the Dalish Origen BUT we are Returning to Ferelden so expect to stumble over a familiar face or twenty. And if that meeting of the Dalish Clans is a thing, and we go to it, we WILL see a lot of the Dalish NPCs.

The only returning chars in DA2 I thought were done well were Isabella and Cullen. I didn't like the rest and wish they hadn't been in it and we'd had new characters instead.

IMO cameos usually do nothing more than make a world/universe seem really small. DA II felt stupid & left me feeling quite annoyed being in an entirely new country yet we run into 20+ characters from DAO. Of course seeing as DA I is supposed to cover a large & varying area across Thedas I would assume we will run into returning characters. Hopefully they will be giving better treatment than the usual dumbed down cameo.

Personally I hope any of the returning characters become plot devices or tools of the inquisition instead of being team members. Cullen could lead a group of Templars, Sten has Qunari....If a certain character is alive (through use of the keep) we would be able to meet and recruit them to help the inquisition. Maybe having them in the inquisition allows us to go to a new location or access to new side quests.

As for teammates,Vivienne was introduced but we know nothing of what type of character she is. Varric seems to be as he was in DA II while Casandra seems to have gotten the stick removed. That still leaves 6 more team members for Bioware to introduce new, complex & interesting characters.

Also I really hope they are done with possessed mages as teammates. To me it just wouldn't make sense (& I'm sick of it) the veil is torn and magic is changing/out of control. I believe Gaider  said that during the demo. I just don't see a possessed mage keeping control during something like that.

I don;t consider "obscure characters" from previous games who got less then 5 minutes of content in the last game to be returning characters. Returning characters would be more up Mass Effect 3's ally tbh.

Cullen sucks.

If he returns as a party member I'm gonna google how to murder him so I can murder him. If he's an agent, I'm gonna murder him. If he shows up on screen being a dumb idiot, I hope we can attack an kill him.

Yeah meeting old characters make Thedas seem like a small town than numerous countries on a giant continent.

Bad enough we're getting Varric and Cass again. Cass who had her own movie and Varric who's back for...reasons. I hope they stop there.

In being cool enough and moderate I mean.

Plus When you only know several reasonable people with good behavior in RL, it's not a bad Idea to be influenced by good video game characters.
You can learn a thing or two from Mordin, Samara, Miranda, Thane, Wynne etc. Well no one learns anything from Socrates, Jesus, Confucius or Kant these days. So at least let people learn being reasonable and good from the few good characters they find in video games and also TV (next to extincted).

Ha. I'm a political science major. Socrates (via Plato) and Kant are my life.

On that note, I'm really looking forward to Vivienne. She has been described as a Machiavellian type. I can't wait to either further or hinder her machinations.
