Would another war make technology to face the Reapers?

I'd say no matter what we have, the Reapers have better stuff.

Asari had tech to create their own mass relays.
Turians gradually improve in war tech overall.
Heck yes they would.
At the same time, it'd take MUCH more in order to properly and quickly defeat the Reapers. In this story, all that's been done was JUST enough to face the Reapers for I guess months.
The Prothians appeared to be better at survival but it SEEMS they sucked at actually having true victories in battle.
This cycle seems to be at more of a sort of balance. We're losing a lot, but also repelling some attacks and outright killing Reapers. At the same time... we have no time. Within a few years tops, the galactic civilization will fall - much faster than the Prothians. We seem to be kicking them harder, but at the expense of a crumbling economy and governmental structure. We're not as built for war, yet pushing harder than any cycle before us.
Part of this is due to Shepard's warnings. The story doesn't reflect it super well, but his actions spread waves of resistance. If Shepard never did his deal (maybe assume Sovereign and Human Reaper didn't happen or were stopped somehow or whatever, *wave it off temporarily here*), this cycle's people would have FLOPPED OVER AND SAID "REAP ME!!!!"
Except scattered krogan (who'd have no unified force once they get hit). And Turians (who wouldn't have had backup or precautionary measures). And so on.
TIM would be there I guess.
Maybe Saren was right and he'd broker peace. Whatever.
But anyway, yes, I think another war would have done nicely for tech and properly set the galaxy up for a larger war. Yet as I was getting at... it wouldn't be enough in itself. A galaxy properly warned ABOUT the Reapers, is a galaxy that's set to do something about them specifically. That's the key. If they had decades of good warning and outright proof to believe, and leadership to do something about it.. yes, they'd kick ass. Maybe still lose, but man it'd be so much more awesome and confident of a defense.

The obvious problem is that the turians didn't completely outclass human forces in the FCW, despite having had interstellar travel for millennia and having fought several wars over that period. Either there's some sort of wapons tech plateau, or humans are awesome.
I'm going to make a leap and say the Asari hold everyone back. Thousand year lifespans, coupled with lots of oversight and control. It's said the Asari take the long view approach to mediating matters. They could just be too patient and slow moving for their own good - and in turn, Citadel culture in general is. The same reason the Volus and Elcor have been held back for so long is the same reason Turians haven't made big strides militarily as well. Humans on the other hand, by the First Contact War, are independent. Couple that with what Liara said in ME1 : That humans are seen as aggressive and go after their goals with gusto... well.. maybe it starts making a little bit of sense.
Like I said, it's a leap. Apologies.

The conduit really isn't a relay at this point as much as a teleporter.

Basically what a relay is, a teleporter. The problem is with this plan, is getting one inside a reaper.Syphon2008 wrote...
The fact that the Mako phases into the citadel with the conduit in me1 kinda suggests they could phase atomic bombs inside of the reapers.

The potential for a technological arms race is already in place in the Mass Effect universe, but Bioware chose not to use it as a story thread and chose a DEM route to empower the Shepard avatar as the "Messiah" type hero.
This is a really cool perspective. Could you elaborate on how you see BW could have taken a technological arms race approach to the resolution of the Reaper conflict instead of the DEM route (which is ****ing lazy and I hate it)

Probably because it's a really poor idea.alleyd wrote...

What theme is that? 'The way to defeat evil is kill each other (probably because of petty reasons) and therefore develop technology? It's repulsive and ridiculous.

I think it's an ironic theme.
To progress technologically, we wage war barbarically. I like it. Mainly because it's real.
By the way, evil is subjective.

plot point =/= theme
even things as important as how they defeat the main villain doesn't necessarily have to inform the theme. its all about execution.

If the villain randomly dies choking on a walnut, no amount of 'execution' is going give that a theme of 'friendship is how we overcome evil' or whatever.

Well, friendship doesn't overcome evil.
Heavy firepower overcomes disagreements though.

I have an even better idea. You should write a story with a clear theme of...oh, I dunno...'technology is evil and should be banned' and then have the villain defeated and everyone's problems solved because of technology. Because 'execution is everything' you should no problem doing such a thing, right?Yougotcarved1 wrote...

Oh, and it has to be a good story, obviously.

Now, what should have happened were the council races throwing arms limitations to the galactic wind, after seeing how overwhelmingly powerful the "Geth" flagship was. Even if they didn't believe in reapers, Sovereign's overwhelming strength should have pushed the organic species into building larger and more powerful fleets to combat the unknown but clearly superior Geth.
But nope, they just kinda forgot about that. Guess they never thought a species would ever build more than one super powerful ship. Then again, that's exactly what the Asari did, so I guess ME species are just dumb.

Let's see. Sovereign is twice as long as even the largest dreadnought and far faster to boot. So I'm guessing at the very least eight times the mass. And the codex clearly says larger ships require more eezo at an exponential rate. We have to guess what this rate is, but I would guess it's at least x^2. Which means such a ship would require 64 times the eezo of a dreadnought. In other words, probably more eezo than most or even all of the species' entire fleet. Even a drastically low rate of x^1.1 would require more eezo than all of humanity's dreadnoughts combined.justafan wrote...
Well, you actuall do see that on a small scale, as the biggest jump in weapons tech is post ME1, after the Geth and Sovereign attack the citadel. That brought in new small-arms weapon as well as Thanix tech.

Could you explain for me what magical hole that eezo is coming out of?

lol its easy. the simplest example i can think of is that one can make it a pyrrhic victory that lets the viewer make up their own mind as to whether the use of the technological evil was worth it.
having a theme doesn't mean you have to ram it through the reader's skulls that the theme is correct. as long as you address the question and provide a meaningful (but debatable) example of how such issues play out in reality then that is a theme.
you might not like the above solution for mass effect but it still counts. and there are tons of other ways to do it, that is just one way.

I never said people should start building their own reapers, merely they should build larger fleets and amend the arms limitation treaties to combat the looming threat of the "Geth". Most species can have somewhere in the realm of 5-10 dreadnoughts, enough to kill 2 reapers if your entire dreadnought force is in one place, and if you keep the council alive they do nothing about that. We see that building up the fleets is possible because the Turians are discussing just that if the council dies.
As for the element zero, we can find that in Mass Effect's go to magic hole, the Asari
