Ugh, I for one do not want another Paarthunax if that's what is being suggested.
I liked Paarthunax personally, thought it was sort of dumb for Beth to make him killable.
Me too, he's super adorable

I let him live but Paarthunax was so annoying in the "old wise guy" stereotype.Elfman wrote...

The only thing I would want out of a dragon the could talk is something LIKE Smaug from The Hobbit. Have it be this guy that is neither good or bad but is just out for themselves. And not necessarily that they could talk. But these beings that are kinda in the middle.

No talking animals. This is one of the underlying rules for the Dragon Age universe, and it includes dragons. Closest we've come to breaking that rule is the desire demon illusion in the Shale adventure (which was technically a talking cat), but it's never going to be a thing otherwise.
So, yes, all dragons must be monsters.
what about mounts?

Think like about Game of Thrones if you want (and have read the books/watched the show). The first dragons were massive and extremely intelligent. But like the Targareyans the inbreeding that occured in such a small gene pool for a species caused the last dragon skulls in the hall to be deformed and incredibly small.nyanyagul wrote...
ok can you guys tell me then what is an old god? arent they dragons? then why are you guys keep saying that dragons are beast with only animalistic intelligence?
Chances are, the current dragons though they might be biologically related have lost some of their abilities over time to the point that now they are just mindless beasts basically.

humm could be an interesting theory but it kinda looked like the dragon guarding the andraste passage in DAO understood every single word from that mad reaver... oh well then again my mabari was intelligent enough to understand everyone in the party...

I'll be honest, the High Dragon in DAII didn't scare me at all for some reason. The High Dragon in DA:O worried me.Nefla wrote...

Smaug when I saw the movie last night and read the book over 10 years ago when I was in middle school terrified me. The idea of something that big, that destructive, that powerful, and that mean can be as intelligent or more intelligent than most of the humanoid characters terrifies me.
I always killed that dude and then the dragon. I never bothered with defiling the ashes so I never got to see that part.nyanyagul wrote...

There's the whole Maric therin dragons blood stuff unexplained thus far.
So we don't know how all that ties in with the in game dragons we're seeing.

I guess that means my dreams of seeing talking unicorns written by Patrick Weekes in DAI are dashed.
Also on a more serious note. Considering Yavana's speaking to the dragon in a strange language in The Silent Grove, it appears dragons are capable of being peaceful and communicable. At least to some people.
I think many entertain the idea that dragons are intelligent sapient beings, rather than giant wild beasts. And if Yavana was telling the truth(which you can never tell with her, her mother, and her sister), there's more to them than just animals.

Probably shapeshifters, would be my guess.
Dragons are powerful and awe inspiring. Taking the form of one and being intelligent and magical inspires worship.

Doesn't the Archdemon sort of talk in Darkspawn Chronicles? I know it's non-canon but is that actually how the Archdemon sounds to the horde?

I would think he is saying that they are gods, and can take any form they want.
Edit: And it's kind of funny that the DA dragons are the most like traditional western dragons from the old mythology. Dragons for the last 50 years or so in modern fiction have been smart, often wise, and sometimes even good, but old myths always had them as wild animals, not evil just animalistic like a lion, at most as smart as a dog or dolphine or something; possible trainable, but an animal at the end of the day.

well there was Breath of Fire, Legend of Dragoon, Bahamut's Lagoon...but this is Dragon Age after all.We know Flemeth can transform into a dragon, but we don't know if she is really a "dragon" and dragon is her "true form", if she really human and "human" is her "true form" or "neither" and she can just transform into other shapes.

Morrigan can transform into a bear, but that doesn't make her one.

And if Corypheous is to be believed then Dumat talked to him, So dragons did talk when Thedas was more Tolken like.

Animal nature isnt all evil but dragons are usually selfish things, idk their intelligence or how much they feel though.
I wonder if theres any Dragon whisperer type person around Thedas
...or if humans can turn into dragons and spiders and bears There could be a way to get one to turn into a human..wont make them any more friendly, but still...

You're assuming that the old gods are dragons, as gods they may have simply wanted to show themselves as dragons, or just looked very dragon like but were a different creature. Sort of how gorillas and chimpanzees look enough a like that someone may not even notice a difference, beyond a few physical things, at first but they are very different. And seeing the arch-demon, it is different in color, shape, size and form than the true dragons we see in the game.
