I like Talking animals that aren't really talking animals, like Kitty, I wish there was some way to let her live as a cat for all time.

And if Corypheous is to be believed then Dumat talked to him, So dragons did talk when Thedas was more Tolken like.

mayeb he didnt exaclty talked but comunicated like how archdemons can comunicate with darkspawns... :P

You mean like a telepathic link? The awakened darkspawn loose the ability to hear an archdemon's song. Which I thought was a state of hypnosis that the archdemon could cast on the darkspawn. So maybe they can communicate to each other through song? :P

No talking animals. This is one of the underlying rules for the Dragon Age universe, and it includes dragons. Closest we've come to breaking that rule is the desire demon illusion in the Shale adventure (which was technically a talking cat), but it's never going to be a thing otherwise.

So, yes, all dragons must be monsters.

Thanks for chiming in on this...

While dragons may not speak, they do seem fairly intelligent at times. In The Silent Grove, Yavana spoke to her dragon and it seemed to understand (and comply with) what she said.

And how do the Old Gods fit into the picture?

and once again dont forget that reaver father kolgrim was capable of comunicating with that dragon guarding the mountain top... so although they may not talki like talking i dont think they have only animalistic intelligence

Talking dragons is certainly a thing in many fantasy genres, but so far, it has not been a Dragon Age thing. And to be quite frank, it's a fantasy premise that leaps into the realm of cliche faster than the speed of light. I'd rather DA be kept as it is in this regard.

my guess is the archdemon's song is related to lyrium, as lyrium seems to emanate a "sound" perceivable to spirits like justice and red lyrium had a similar effect on bartrand.
So with the information at hand, i'm betting lyrium, especially the red type is closely related to the old gods, i'd even go so far as to say that huge red lyrium veins are in fact an old god in cristalized form, and when a darkspawn comes into contact with its core, an archdemon is created(a darkspawn abomination, soul of an old god with a tainted body).
so what i'm saying is that lyrium is basically spirits/demons/the fade itself in cristalized form, pure magic materialized, making the old gods the same, beings of pure magic.

assuming this is true however raises another question
...why would a being of pure magic residing in the black/golden city want the tevinter magisters intervention?
why would any being from the fade want contact with mortals? the only answer provided by the series is, to go to the other side.
that would mean the old gods were more akin to demons than anything else, at least, in Dumat's case.
So then, what was the cause for the taint's origin if it's existence is also alien to spirits and demons? what was something that was unique about the tevinter magisters attempt that made the taint come to be? something that is a very unnatural occurrence on both realms...
how about, a large mass of mortal flesh that physically traversed into the fade. My bet is that this attempt caused a chain reaction that morphed the flesh and blood together with very fabric of the fade, creating the taint.

anyway this is just my theory.:innocent:
back to dragons.

There was no desire demon. It was the cat's natural evil all along.

There's that dragon yavana was speaking with.

I'd like to see an intelligent high dragon that we can communicate with telepathically/ magically and see thier side of the story.

But that's probably not gonna happen because I'd love to have a choice of killing a dragon due what they have to say

Yeah, in Dragon Age the actual dragons can't talk--they are smart for animals, but still just animals. So this request is along the lines of going to Africa and saying "Why are all the lions dangerous? Can't I have a chat with them?" They're animals. They don't chat. They will, however, happily try to eat you if you let your guard down.

Not Simba or Mufasa!

Maybe in this game when we reach a certain level or do a certain quest, we become a dragon tamer and get a Dragon as a mount.

The last time we had intelligent dragons, they established a religion around them and became leaders of the Blight on Thedas. :/

Maybe if we play as a mage we can shapeshift into a dragon?

Which Skyrim dragon do you want him to be like? Paarthurnax? Odahviing?

None of the above? Skyrim actually did the impossible and made dragons boring. Dragons really should be more of an event rather than something annoying you need to get rid of so you can go shopping.

I'd agree with you, but I just finished Dragonborn, and it is so awesome to be able to dominate and ride them. Have them drop you off near your favorite hold to fence all the loot, by arriving in style. Love it.:)

But perhaps, not converse with them, but tame them like the dragon rider or have one as some sort of attack dragon?

That's a fresh take on dragons and animals in fantasy.

Thank you! The inclusion of talking animals in fantasy tends to be a deal-breaker for me. I don't especially mind if it's soft fantasy, but hard or urban fantasy that tends to deal mostly in reality, it's pushes my suspension of disbelief too far.

Like in "His Dark Materials", I was accepting of everything, even the souls outside of the bodies taking the form of talking animals, but the moment it got to the talking polar bears... *hands up*... yeah, thrown completely out of this world, the shark itself just announced it has been jumped.

Although as a caveat, if we ever had a level from the Mabari's POV, like when we briefly took over Joker in ME2, I wouldn't mind "hearing" the Mabari's internal monologue while they enacted a rescue or whatever. I have the feeling it'd be rather amusing.

I wanted to ask this too. Kolgrim stands right in front of the High Dragon and asks her permission to pass. After a few roars she simply flies away again, without eating Kolgrim or Warden & co. The dragon seemed more intelligent then you would give a wild animal credit for.

It is said that they're basically at mabari level of intelligence, give or take a few sinapses:P
and a mabari is pretty intelligent for a dog since it can comprehend what someone is talking about, it just isn't capable of verbally communicating with its master, same goes for dragons...intelligent yes but still an animal.

you forget they can even comunicate to bloodmage and grant magic power like teaching how to use blood magic... that is hardly mabari lvl...
