I'm curious if there are mods/fixes for these two issues:

I would really love to be able to switch from a weapon/shield or two weapon combo to a ranged weapon. Has there been any work to resolve this?

In Baldur's Gate 2 using BGT, by girlfriend and I are frustrated with a multiplayer feature involving conversations. In Baldur's Gate 1, every conversation would appear for both of us to read, but in the second game, only the conversations deemed absolutely essential are shared. We want all of them shared. Is there any way to achieve this?

Thanks for your time.

In Multiplayer from permissions go to options then select the dialogue button. It says it will pause action on all machines and share all dialogue.

(not tried this, thinking it looks like a good idea. The bit I hate is where the client dialogue window maximises after every host conversation. I'm constantly dropping it back to the middle size).

I can vaguely remember something being created to switch from a 2 handed weapon to sword/shield but doubt I can find details on it. Vaguely remember it being a macro.

You could try this. I haven't tried it myself so can't comment how it works though.

Thanks. I haven't tried any of this yet because we haven't played the game couple of days. The offhand weapon swap mod looks really finicky, but that may be the only game in town, I don't know. I'm extremely surprised that there is not widespread use of something that swaps weapons like this. Don't a lot of people want to use bows and also shields or offhand weapons?

It seems that we have to change the multiplayer permissions every single time we load the game. Is that how it is supposed to work? It at least does solve the problem, but is annoying to have to constantly toggle.

In your configuration file you should have an option under multiplayer saying something like:
Default Permissions=00000001
Changing all the 0s to 1s should enable everything at the start (or just change the ones you want).

There's also a configuration option for:
Pausing Dialogue=
if you want to set this through the config file rather than in game.
