Only played Dragon Age Origins and haven't finished Awakening yet.

Do Darkspawn still linger on the surface even after years or decades without the blight occuring?

They occasionally make it to the surface, but they mostly become the problem of the dwarves, as they lurk in the Deep Roads pretty much all the time. This dates back to the First Blight, as the dwarven kingdoms lost all of the Deep Roads when Dumat awoke, and though 5 Blights have been quelled, the darkspawn are always active underground.

I know that. Does that mean Grey Wardens spend most of their time in the Deep Roads?

They patrol the Deeproads (according to the codex of Hawke's sibling if they become a GW) and sometimes darkspawn are on the surface apparently cause in DA2 you fight some on the beach and they do missions that are darkspawn-related and Idk

Only at the end of their lives--when the Taint gets the best of them, they head down to fight with the Legion in a final battle against the Darkspawn.  The rest of them remain vigilant--pretty much their only job is the watch for a Blight and prepare for it.

From what I understand, the Wardens will take expeditions down to the Deep Roads as well to gauge strength, see if the are organizing and if they are pushing forward past established lines... all of these could indicate a new Blight approaching.... oh, and if you are to believe Alistair, they sit around and have drinking contests

OP, must you create a dozen different threads everyday? :pinched:

On topic: I think they plot and scheme world domination.

Just played through that convo today with my current Warden--a great bit of dialogue.

For the most part what alOu wrote and I'd add they search for new recruits to join the order. Darkspawn do come to the surface from time to time and Wardens are called out to investigate when these events happen.

I'd say the DLC of GOA was a good indication of this.  Even though this wasn't darkspawn at all; but, still a disturbance in the deep roads and the Warden Commander was called to investigate.

Well my Warden wouldn't know he's too busy being a father as for the rest of the Wardens: they occasionally have expeditions into the Deep Roads, they recruit people or conscript, preparing for Blights, as Secretlyapotato said they patrol the Deep Roads and when it's time for their Calling: they enter the Deep Roads to slay as many darkspawn as they can before being overwhelmed and slain, oh and as al0u mentioned we participate in drinking contests and when there is a royal bastard amongst our ranks we make them King and sometimes perform dark rituals. All in a days work .

Eachother.

They're actually a lot more exciting between Blights.

They remain vigil. They see if there are darkspawn attacting villages and kill the threat. Do research and deep road expedition. They are probably alot more picky when it come to recruiting though

Grey Wardens fight the darkspawn during Blights, and they fight the darkspawn between Blights.

"In War, Victory.

In Peace, Vigilance

In Death, Sacrifice"

Grey Warden motto.

When it isn't a blight, Grey Wardens remain vigilant, keeping an eye on darkspawn and fight them wherever they appear on the surface, and sometimes go down into the Deep Roads to fight them, especially when it's time for their calling.

I suppose they do a lot of investigations and remain vigilant about Darkspawn. I bet they throw a lot of good parties as well.

Besides what others have said about keeping an eye out for Darkspawn raiding parties or gasuging their strength in the Deep Roads, the Wardens also probably look for ways to avoid the other Blights or at least make them as little costly as possible. Like how Avernus was trying to crack the secrets of Warden blood since the Warden's have only tapped the possible potential of it.

Avernus was also trying to find ways to master the taint, in such an way anyone who took the joining would survive by default and not die from the taint.

As for Wardens, as the others said, they explore the deep roads, looking for any signs of a new blight. Perhaps they also try to find Broodmothers? Killing them aways strikes an blow against the darkspawn.

What I wonder is what the wardens will do once the seventh blight is over. Will new old gods suddenly show up? Or will the darkspawn stop hearing their song and start rampaging the surface non stop?

I'm guessing what ever the hell they want to do. Orgies, drinking parties, giant dinner gatherings, etc.

Anders: A related question. What do Grey Wardens do when there aren't darkspawn running amok? I mean, are there parties? Do we travel the world, take over small kingdoms?

1. We become forgotten and die young.
2. We remain vigilant.
3. That sounds like a good start.
4. Whatever we want to.
