In the DAI demo I'm sure we've all seen at this point, you're given a choice to save a village by sending your soldiers to defend it, or try to save a keep by doing the same thing. So I'm curious, which will people on this board choose? And seeing as it mirrors the choice at the end of Awakening too, I'm curious about which one you chose to save in that game too.

Personally, I always save the village in Awakening and plan to do the same thing in DAI. A keep is supposed to be a secure fortress, strong to bring down and filled with lots of strong soldiers. A keep's entire purpose is to be very difficult to defeat. But a village is pretty much just a tiny little area with a crappy town watch and filled with people who can't fight and barely has a wall (that will crumble very easily if the enemy decides to breach it). The keep is supposed to be able to protect itself, I shouldn't need to babysit it. But the village doesn't even have an expectation to be able to handle a siege, it's obviously going to be wiped out. So if I lose a keep because I protected the village, than I've lost nothing of value... Because if the keep was worth having, it would have protected itself like it was supposed to. If it can't without my help, than the keep was weak and useless anyway. Keeps are supposed to protect, they sholdn't need extra help to do that. But losing the village, something that isn't supposed to protect anything, that is a loss no matter what.

So what will you choose in DAI, and what do you typically choose in DAA?

The devs have said that while there will be scenarios where you can only save one of multiple options, the demo scenario is not one of them. They've said that with careful play you can save both the keep AND the village (and, I would assume, leave the healthy guards to protect the injured ones). So I'll be saving both.

Even so. This is me wanting to see the mindsets here. Even if it's hypothetical, it still works.

It depends on a LOT of factors in that scenario.

- I will likely send my soldiers to defend the keep - that is what they are supposed to be for.

- I will send my special forces team to save the town, because that's what a small group should be able to achieve.

- I will meet up with my troops at the Keep after the town (and my supply lines) are secured.

A keep is stupid if you're just going to sit in a siege - and I don't do things just to be dark and edgy and sacrifice the peasants for my hardass playthrough.

So largely, I will be doing what you will OP.

The main force of the Red Tamplars will definitely attack the keep. I will order my soldiers to defend the keep while my companions and I deal with any enemies at the village.

It's going to depend for me if it's a faction I want to work with. The little people I always save. If I don't like the noble, dwarf, or elf, and don't want them as an agent, then most likely burn it all. If I do want them as an agent or their people's help then save all I can.

In one playthrough I will save the village and the next save the keep. I did the same for Awakening.

I will try every option but I lean more towards goody two-shoes helping innocents and non combatants before troops or myself.

Keep, far more strategic importance for the Inquisition and we need to maximize our influence across thedas to take advantage of resources to combat our enemies.

Awakening was a different scenario entirely to village vs keep. There I chose to save the city for similar reasons to me planning to save the keep in Inquisition. Amaranthine city is of immense importance not only to the Arling of which My Warden was Arl of but to the whole Kingdom of Ferelden. The effects on the economy for loosing a major source of trade like Amaranthine would be devastating since Ferelden so desperately needs this revenue to recover from the devastation of the blight

I hope there is a dialogue option for that...I tend to RP and I don't want peeps to assume I am cold-hearted and decided to leave civilians to die. I rather say like:

"Go to the keep, my team and I will kick some ass in the village"

I like your answer, very objective and logical. I didn't think of the economic implications.

For my Awakening choice, Vigil's Keep was an upgraded fortification that is designed to held off against a numerically superior foes. While City of Amaranthine have high walls that could be defended, insufficient troops made it difficult to resist an invasion. Also you can't move entire population of the city to the safety of the keep, because of the logistics involved and rooms/supplies available in the keep, plus of its political and economic factors, saving the city becomes a justification for the existence of the keep in the first place.

However in the DAI demo, a keep should have been more easily defended, and enough room for refugees from the village, and of small population in a village, it is more sound to escort the villagers to the keep and defend everyone from a safer location, I highly doubt the village itself is defensible. So the key here for me is the people, village might be destroyed, but as long as the people are still alive, it can be rebuilt. But maybe next time they should build the village closer to the keep, so any invader would think twice before attacking them. My only concern is time, if we don't have enough time to send the villagers to the keep, then I will be forced to defend the village, even if it is a suicide. It is far better to die protecting the people then cowarding behind high walls while people that rely upon you gets massacred.

The question is, will that even be a factor in the gameplay? Has BioWare said anything about this?

I would destroy their ships first, save the village then flank them as they try to take the keep. A good keep should be able to hold until reinforcements arrive, A village almost literally has no defenses.

I really dont like this concept at all... didnt like it in awakening either. I certainly hope the example shown in tne demo is the o nly time the game does this...if this is the tenor of the game, then I will be very unhappy

The devs said it's possible to save both, but it will be very difficult.

I'll save the keep, and let the village burn. Filthy peasants breed like rabbits. The occasional cleanse is welcome, to keep their population (and fleas) in check.

I'll make different decisions with different characters, but my "standard mindset" favors expedient decisions. If there's something significant to gain (like food, other resources and the goodwill of the people I may be about to rule) by it then I may save the village, depending on the importance of the military resources lost at the keep. If there's nothing significant to gain, then I'll save the keep as a rule. In a war, a good feeling alone is not enough to balance the loss of a keep.

This in the hypothetical case made by the OP that it wasn't possible to save both.
