It's IGN. It's word is worth as much as dung.
To you. Not to the majority of gamers, I'd argue.
To me, the codex's word is worth less than dung (because dung is great fertilizer), but certain of the more vocal Bioware detractors hang their hats there and believe all they say. it's all relative.
This is a list by what is considered a largely successful gaming site--one could argue that they represent some large portion of gamers. According to Alexa, they're nearly the top visited gaming site out there. Only beaten by a taiwanese site, that I saw. I looked from #1--way, way too much porn in between.
Like it or not, they're popular. Thus, their opinions can be considered significant.

Significant as reflecting the opinions of a large portion of "gamers." If it were not so, they would not have such large "readership."
Just as magazines reflect the opinions of their target audience, and the size of that can be seen (generally) by the subscription base, I'd argue that the traffic of a purely opinion site like this is reflective of their "power" or "influence."

I'd say your right that they no doubt reflect the opinions of a portion of gamers. However you're mistaken in using their website traffic in attempting to show how many people agree with their opinions. It's like reading a news paper, people tend to read them for news not necessarily the editorial section and if you do read it you don't always agree with it.EntropicAngel wrote...

...People still know what an editorial section is right? I'm not that old yet I hope.

I'll agree that the news portion does muddy the issue. However, IGN is not privy to news that no one else has. Pretty much all news winds up on the internet, and travels through all the websites. Thus I'd argue that you can't say that news prevents us from knowing.
Same as newspapers: the Wall Street Journal has a distinctly different demographic than the Tribune or the Post (pick your city, lol).
Fair enough, though: I'll say it's muddy, but i would still say that their opinions are significant, if you're talking about what gamers as a group think.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is extremely popular too, but that doesn't stop people who don't watch it from claiming to be smarter than people who do.EntropicAngel wrote...

There are other cities with more than one newspaper?

List is hugely unprofessionally made.
Even the damn Orange Box is on the list!
This should be the best games list, not best video game collections you can buy.
