So why still release the game on the 360 and PS3?

Wow, I can't believe this is a serious question. Yeah, abandon ship on the install base of the last gen. That's happened before and worked out successfully for franchises. Yup.

Isn't it time for developers to move on though? I mean last gen had like 8 yrs, they could in theory continue to release cross gen games and never fully embrace the new tech.

Persona 4 came out on the PS2 in 2008, still sold very well.

Now I know allot of people have those systems and played the first two games on them.  But seeing as this game missed the 2013 release window I kinda don't see the scenes in it.  By this time next year the 360 and PS3 will be more or less dead consoles with no new content being put out.  Don't get me wrong I think it's great that they are doing it.  Just from a business standpoint it kinda seems like a bad idea.

sheesh. Those consoles as you put it are a long way from being dead and won't be anywhere near dead anytime soon.

Guess you aren't following things on the various forums very much are  you ?

Without a toolkit there's no incentive to buy the pc verion of the game imo and the consoles besides being too expensive and not having enough new games mean most players will be hanging on to their current systems for a while.

then it adds to my point, with everything added together this game is going to have to sell a lot of copies.

But the development cost is greatly decreased, as a result of both engine scalability and having worked with the engine for years. So it's probably (we don't know, this is all conjecture) taken them LONGER to develop for the new consoles than for the old ones. And since the old ones have far, far more users, it makes sense to release on the old consoles.

But remember though the AAA market cost is highly inflated. Dead space 3 case in point, was a game that was fun. It sold like between 600,000-700,000. EA's wanted the game to sell 5 million copies. So in there eyes it was a failure.

That's something EA needs to fix because DA:I shouldn't need to sell a ton of copies. Expecting it to seems a bit naive. Scale the marketing to match the market for a game like DA:I and they should be fine. Also take into account that not every RPG can sell like Skyrim.

I don't know about "very". Unless VG Charts is off by a few million in a more positive direction.

Exactly. However EA has focus groups and what not , and share holders to contend to. So I will reiterate my point this game needs to sell a lot of copies across the board. I really hope they do not think this game will sell like skyrim though. Because I don't even think Bethesda expected Skyrim to sell as well as it did.

Of course DAI has to sell a ton of games after DA2 flopped..ME4 has to sell a ton and a half of games after the ME3 ending controversy.

Amazes me some players are unaware of how obvious this is.:innocent:

Bit of tangent, but I agree. Is VGChartz word of god?

No.

But if developers and publishers really don't want people going by their numbers, then it's on them to release accurate correction numbers or to just assume that everyone is going to use the VGChartz when talking about their game.

It's like saying a Wikipedia article written about your company is wrong and then refusing to have the article updated, but instead just complaining whenever someone uses Wikipedia to talk about your company. VGChartz is the video game sales source of record, simply due to the fact that they are the most accurate ones for the largest group of games. If the sales reflected there are wrong, it's on developers to correct them, not for them or other fans to slight the only source that people can reliably go to.

4.5 isn't "beast." Even the more generous 5 isn't.

Skyrim sold 10 million for an RPG in the first 10 weeks. THAT'S beast. Madden sells claps to that number on an annual basis. THAT'S beast. Super Mario Brothers for the NES sold over 22 million units, lifetime. THAT'S beast.

ME3 sales were good for how badly it was received. But merely decent compared to other AAA headliner games.

I hope EA doesn't give DA:I a stupidly high target for copies sold, if DA:I sales are below target enough to be considered a failure then it'll likely mean the end of the franchise.

I love my 360 and have no intention of ever getting rid of it.
And I LOVE Dragon Age.
So if DA was for PC and/or Xbox One & PS4 only I would be completely screwed.
Bumhole screwed.
'Cause I have never been able to enjoy playing on a PC (and I'm a peasant) and I don't want to not be able to play my 360 games and lose my data.
So the longer the DA franchise is produced for the PS3 and 360, the better.

Better short term., not long term, because of hardware specifications.

I'm not sure how that relates to what I, and this thread, are/am talking about. This thread is about the financial viability of DA: I for old consoles. I'm saying that DA: I is virtually gauranteed on old consoles because of A) the much stronger market share, penetration, whatever, B) the limited cost as a result of scalable engines, and C) the limited cost as a result of practically a decade of development.

This is conjecture. We have no documentation saying EA expects DA: I to sell 5 million copies.

It's been reported in other forums that EA has said this.

Believe it or not.

This will almost certainly be the last DA game released for it, if DA: I is any indication and the DA team is shifting to greater development cycles. Even if it weren't, and it were only two years until the next DA game, that'd be Holiday 2016--outside of the ten-year window the console makers promised.

You're going to have to upgrade in the next two years or so, if you want to play any new games.
