Hmm, I've never played Halo, thought she was.  /homersimpsondomoment

No wuckers mate, I just thought that was a bitt odd. He is definetly a guy. Though we can Replace him with Kerrigan  in your list she is both strong and evil and everyone loves her.

Strong women as protagonist are cool but a powerful woman doesn't need to be a powerful woman by acting like a man. That is the mistake a lot of writers make when writing female protagonists.

The movie, G.I. Jane comes to mind.

Ripley from Alien/Aliens(forget those rubbish sequels afterwards) is a good example of a strong female protagonist.

I agree. Look at all the walking steroid/testosterone filled space marines who also swear and have tattoos that people think are cool. This leads me to believe that if Subject Zero were a man, people would think she's badass instead of being "disturbed." Gaming is a predominantly male audience, and it shows.

I've NEVER seen any male figure intended to be "cool" be covered in a full body tattoo, piercings, and be skinheaded.

If I ever saw ANYBODY that looked like SuZe (male or female) IRL, I would avoid them.

That s*** doesn't make you look "strong" or "cool" it makes you look like you've gone through much disturbing things in life, and that you are confrontational and potentially violent.

Well, aren't you boring. I happen to like those type of people because I find them and their ordeals interesting, in fact if it weren't for the whole "less likely" to get a job thing, then I would cover my entire arm in tattoos.

Call me old fashioned but I get annoyed by the whole "punk" vibe that SuZe gives off.

SHe was perfect! Amazingly tough, but also had something going on with Hicks and was motherly towards Newt.

Well, yes I am boring I suppose.  I'm rather unsocial.  I am definitely unconfrontational and quiet.  I'd rather read a book than go outside.  I'd rather sleep than party.

That's who I am.

Hehe, I have no idea.  I've been carefully avoiding as many spoilers as I could the last few days.  In fact I should probably just leave the forums now.

Honestly,. my problem with SuZe isn't that she's a 'strong' woman, or that she may or may not be projecting to hide weakness, or that she's covered in tattoos and half naked. MY problem is that she's not a person I would want watching my, or anyone else's back in a military excursion. Judging BY HER MARKETING she's too unpredictable and aggressive, she SEEMS prone to disobeying orders and starting infighting within the squad. On that note Grunt may be a liability too. That's one thing that bugs me, i'm gonna be spending so much time trying to 'earn trust,' but there's no apparent consideration given to whether or not I trust the other characters. Since I seemingly have the power to decide their fate, in one way or another, don't you think they should be trying to earn my trust and respect?

Despite that, I'll still be exploring all possible aspects of each and every character.

Moreover, just for the record, I would feel no different were she a man.

That's like asking if it's been confirmed that the sun will NOT rise tomorrow. Of course there's no proof until it happens. In this case we'll all find out next week either way (I for one think that's hog wash)

One that can bench press 500lbs? No, must be a woman that can pull an 18-wheeler with their teeth.  Oh wait, one that scares men off just with their looks? I got it, one that scares men off with their overpowering strong body odor!!!:crying:

There was a female Spartan as a bonus character in in 360's Dead Or Alive (erm, 4?) game, so maybe that generated the confusion for some people?

Yes, also, there's Samus, an armored space warrior who usually hides her face which might confuse some.

Hmm. Not so much she hides her face, but the suit she wears is gives her an ultra masculine profile. Still not sure how she crams her ****** into that thing.

That's a bit ignorant - don't you think you're tarring a lot of people with the same brush, mate?  Tattooing/piercings have been around for thousands of years - the cultural connotations of which varies greatly depending on the time and place...

In response to the OP, it's a pretty interesting question...  It really comes down to how strong you are compared to that person (in terms of experience, I would say).  If you perceive them as stronger than you, then they might come across as intimidating.  But the more you understand why they are the way they are, the less scary they become...  In any case, having a heap of tattoos shouldn't make someone scary - meh, heaps of folk around here have them [where I live, in UK], and obviously they're not all the same.

Certainly, it's not surprising that a character like SuZe might naturally gravitate toward tattoo sub-culture in some fashion, but that's not to say that all people who are into tattoos are like Suze.

Awesome.

Arguing that SuZe is "a hurt and
troubled" person underneath all the make-up just proves my point. Sure,
she may have what most of us would call "a troubled past" but she
really seems to like what she has become, and, from an artistic
standpoint, so do i. Please remember we're still talking about a
characterdesign here, not a real person, 'cause as you all know, things
get REALLY complicated when it comes to real people. I really hope that
bioware have the balls not to diminish her by "curing" her of her
badassness along the way.

I don't think she'll ever be "cured" of her badassness. I think she'll just be more stable, more steady. But that's only if you're a Paragon--if you're Renegade, I don't think her wild side will calm down.

Either way, I love the girl. If anything, the fact that she's so controversial and so hotly debated--that polarization says she has something.

Also, according to the recent video on the art of ME2, many of her tattoos are medical in nature. What that encompasses I'm not sure, but it was mentioned.

I've explained my personality in other posts, and why you should excuse my ignorance.  It's just something I'd rather not deal with.  I'm interested, however, to learn about the history/culture/reasonings behind doing such things, but I would do that through second hand accounts (books, documentaries, journals, etc).

seriously, the internets is chokeful of threads about how "disturbed" everyone is about Subject Zero. This is a little too telling to not be embarrasing. I for one really LOVE that characterdesign, seriously, it doesn't mean that i would humb her in RL (but i'm not even sure about that), but for a GAMECHARACTER she is quite unique and badass, it puzzles me that everyone and their mother seem to hate her. There's already enough ****** and asses in that game to please the adolescent, we need something to counterbalance that. And i really love the overall characterdesign so far, just "Grunt" seems a little to obvious to me.

To answer the title, No. They are terrified of lesbians though. Stupid Casey Hudson and his no F/F...kill thane...stupid kill jacob too...losers anyway.... BLEH!

The reason why I'm not big on SuZe isn't because she's "strong" (and I think we've had enough talk about why she isn't), but rather because she's coarse. I'm not a puritan, but I don't exactly find cussing with every alternate word a turn-on...
