I just started playing ME1, I'm about 7 hours into it and two thirds of the "crates" I come across I can not open because my skill level is to low.  At another point my Parogon points must have been to low because I had conversation choices greyed out.

What am I doing wronge?  Or what do I have to do in order to get my skill levels high enough to open crates?

Thanks!

Sounds like you started out blind here. Go to Mass Effect wiki for guides.

You need a techie person in your group with a high decryption/electronics to open many of the crates and crashed probes in the game. Your paragon/renegade choices also need to have enough points put into charm/intimidate to be used. Your para/rene bar filling up just unlocks more of the charm/intimidate tree to put points into.
Hope this helps some.

Max out the Electronic/Decryption on your squad mates, and take what you want for Shepard.

Works best on Normal difficulty.

Bring either Tali or Garrus on every mission, and make sure that they have full electronic/decryption skills and you'll never have to worry about another crate again (I actually had a theory a while ago that this usefulness is what made the two fan favorites). Odds are you haven't been using at least one of them, and should have plenty of points to spend on the skills.

As for paragon options, just make sure you put skill points into it as often as you unlock higher tiers. And you unlock higher tiers by using paragon options often.

The first thing you're going to want to do is turn auto-level off in the game-settings if you haven't already. This spends the skill points you earn from leveling up for you, and it doesn't upgrade the talents relevant to decryption and electronics as quickly as is possible. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get back points it has already spent (unless this is different on the PC/PS3). You normally earn 3, 2, or 1 upgrade points (depends on what level/xp bonuses) every time you level up.

Upgrade points are spent in this screen, which is accessed from the "Squad" tab:

When you get here, you'll be able to rotate through the squadmates that are with you, or just Shepard if you're on the Normandy.

The two talents relevant to opening crates are decryption and electronics. Most crates will be opened by decryption, but a few will require electronics.

If your Shepard doesn't have these abilities, you'll need to bring a Squadmate that does such as Tali (decryption and electronics), Kaidan (decryption and electronics), Garrus (decryption and electronics), or Liara (electronics). These squadmembers must be with you when you attempt to open crates for it to work.

If you go back and look at the point-spend screen (image), you'll notice three triangles along each path. These are thresholds that generally expand the capabilities of whatever talent they're on. The first, second, and third triangles in decryption and electronics correspond to easy, advanced, and hard decryption/electronics respectively. The actual minigame you play afterwords doesn't seem to correspond to the difficulty level (at least on 360), the names merely indicate how high your skill level must be upgraded.

As for the Paragon/Renegade options, there are two parts to this. First, in order to unlock the ability to spend points on charm/intimidate, you have to earn paragon/renegade points through your actions. Second, you must then spend level points (in the same way you did for decryption and electronics) to increase your charm/intimidate skills to the level required for the dialogue option.

Hopefully that covered everything; it's difficult to think back to how this looks when seeing it for the first time :).

More to the point, you don't *have* to hack containers (you'll hit the credit/omnigel ceiling soon enough).

For persuasion, you have to use as many paragon/renegade options to unlock the charm/intimidate tree (in fact, if you are willing to replay the game 4 times you can unlock the entire tree for free). If you are really desperate to pick an unavailable speech option or just want to play the game without having to pick paragon every single time then look into console commands.

I recommend hacking the containers, though. Shop inventories are pretty lousy and prices are high. It's more efficient to ignore the stores and open more boxes to get what you want.

Also what platform are you playing on?

If it is the PC, you could always 'cheat' your way to all the talent points you need by using the command console.
