Just Tali actually sounds fine. Uncommon, but it still sounds normal to pronounce, and it is cute and feminin for a girl. It's the 'Zorah part that is a bit weird.

I think it's cool. It's really no different then when parents started naming their kids after Harry Potter characters. If my kid comes home with a friend named after a character in a video game, movie or book that I like then i'd wanna meet that kids parent cause they're probably awesome.

I remember seeing a poster hearing talking his newborn daughter, whom he named Liara.

I named my cat Garrus, but I would never name my child that I will never have that.

Tali would've been fine, Liara sounds fine, but Tali'Zorah as the first name is stretching it.

Lol, then the kid will justify that a certain character in a video game had trouble with the ship's registrationB)

It is a bad idea, IMO.

Giving your child a strange name is pretty much inviting them to be bullied by other kids. Your kid better be a fighter, otherwise, its going to be long, hard slog through elementary and high school.

And its also just plain weird if you name your child after the fictional character your player character was banging, particularly if you're the type of gamer who treats the protag like some kind of self-insert into the Mass Effect universe.

Well, you could always name your kid Conrad and chuckle behind his back while he hopefully becomes awesome and popular.

My first kid is going to be named "the Sheppurd".
No seriously, why would anyone do that?

Depends on where this person goes to school. I went to school with a boy named January and a girl named Secret and no one ever said anything. Making fun of people's names isn't as big of a thing as some people like to make it out to be. Most kids who have a name they find embarassing just make up a nickname or shorten their real one. The people who really have trouble are the ones with regular names spelled in ridiculous ways or names that are spelled one way and pronounce it in another.

Ultimately, the guys can determine what they want to name their daughter. And from what he wrote, it's because his wife fell in love with the name itself, not because they liked the character of Tali'Zorah so much. I mean, it is a beautiful sounding name.
That being said, even though I love the Mass Effect story a lot, the idea of "naming your kid after a story" sounds wrong on a basic level. It's just a story. It should not be given the right to intrude into another person's life that much. If grown people pay attention to a story so much that their whole life revolves around it, it feels similarly wrong. And here, the parents are making a somewhat related choice for someone who is not them.

I just stumbled upon this discussion on the Escapist forums, where the father to be posted about it. The consensus seems to be that Tali sounds alright, but Tali'Zorah is a bit too ridiculous. If you like the game, then name your dog after one of its characters, but the child will have to live with it and will likely not appreciate it.

All parents have to get their kid's names from somewhere, why not a video game? Most (if not all) of the character's names are "real" names anyway (as in, they weren't made up by the writers), so what's the problem? My daughter isn't named after a video game character but still has an unusual name (Emmika)...it happens. She's currently campaigning to change her name to Emma because she's obsessed with Emma Watson - she *wants* to name herself after something! It's not gonna happen though, she's only 9.

Basically, I don't see the problem. If you think it's a pretty name then go ahead.

It seems that "Tali" was a name long before Mass Effect made use of it: http://www.ucl.ac.uk...-staff/t_sharot

Besides, I see nothing wrong with the name "Tali"; it's fairly inconspicuous.

Including "Zorah" doesn't make sense anyway, since that would essentially mean that the girl has two last names.

Tali and Liara are quite unique names for girls. If I was looking for a girl's name that really stood out I might consider them but even so I wouldn't necessarily be naming my child in honor of a video-game character even if I did.

If I ever get a dog I am naming it Wrex, though.

That being said, if I was ever able to get my hands on a Xenesthis immanis, I would name it Tali'Zorah in a heartbeat.

http://3.bp.blogspot.../x_immanis2.jpg

After all, they are both extremely rare, rather exotic, and strikingly beautiful in their own way.

Edit: I actually offered a friend $450 for his mature female, and he still declined. <_<

I agree that Tali would be a fine name. Tali'Zorah, however, is a bit too much. I read a suggestion about using Zorah as the middle name, which I can also support :)

Good illustration of why it's problematic: you'd want to meet the parents, not the child itself.

Lol if I had a daughter I wanted to call her Tali too.
Edit Just Tali I thought Zorah was too much myself.

Zorah I agree makes no sense.. But something like Tali or even Talivas seems more than appropriate. Garrus I have no problem with either.

Well, I certainly wouldn't do it. But Tali's alright. It kind of works as just a regular name, provided it doesn't say Tali 'Zorah on the child's ID.

It's not like naming your son The. His middle names being Illusive and Man.

Still not something I'd do. I bet this guy romanced Tali as well. Not sure what to make of that.

It was actually his wife that suggested it in the first place, and the idea came about after playing the first Mass Effect (where romance with Tali isn't yet possible). So no need to worry about the implications of that scenario.
