Or ... I could name my son Thorian. Sounds like a badass, really.

Bonus points if he eventually becomes a botanist. Or a hypnotist.

Nay. Naming your pets after video game (or fictional) characters is a plus, though. And some names obviously aren't exclusive to gaming (ex. people keep mentioning 'Tali', I met a client several months ago who was over the age of 30 and her first name was 'Tali', alas she knew nothing of Mass Effect). Of course, I'll never name anything 'Liara' now, but oh well.

My preference is to name children after close family.

Liara and Samara are the only non-human names I would consider.

We named two of our ferrets Trip and Monkey, ala Enslaved, so to each their own. :D

No kids in our future, but we may name future pets after someone from ME, knowing my hubs.

I might name my pets after a few. There's something incredibly charming to me about having a pitbull named Wrex.

It is a bad idea, IMO.

Giving your child a strange name is pretty much inviting them to be bullied by other kids. Your kid better be a fighter, otherwise, its going to be long, hard slog through elementary and high school.

And its also just plain weird if you name your child after the fictional character your player character was banging, particularly if you're the type of gamer who treats the protag like some kind of self-insert into the Mass Effect universe.

Kids thought Spiros was a weird name when I was growing up, so unless it's a name like PopCan or Seven, I don't know - lol.  I want to name my son Ares or something, something badass.   I'd totally name my kid Liara to just be angry at it for no reason - why are you staring at us like that pappa?  You ruined EVERYTHING.

Depends on the name, really.

Naming your child Tali or Kaidan or even Javik is one thing, but please don't name the poor kid Grunt.

Considering how crazy of a world we inhabit, I would honestly not be surprized if someone has gone and called their kid "Grunt".

The closest I have come to this is naming my XCOM squad members with all the characters of Mass Effect.

Actual children? Hmmm... doubt it. However, Tali is a cute name for a little girl.

There is a difference, for me at least, between raging at a name that's not normal (like Emma, Jake, etc.) and naming your kid something unique for the heck of being unique.

If you're naming the kid because of the latter or because you always wanted to name your kid after a frivolous thing (depending on people's opinions of what's frivolous of course), you're not thinking about the kid.

Of course, where the line is between wanting to name your kid something with a sincere and honorable feeling behind it or just 'thinking it would be cool', is a big subject of debate. I'm sure any guy named, I'm just saying whichever name I can think up first, Archibald shouldn't necessarily think their parents were idiots or wanted them to get picked on (for whoever is named Archibald and is proud of it, good for you!)... Though you might want to rethink naming your kid after your great aunt Gertrude (if that's your name, I didn't mean to insult you xD)

Last line is between proudly naming your kid after something you hold dear... or giving him/her a name that won't get him/her picked on by other kids, because what name is truly unmockable? And if your last name already provides mocking material:p It's a thin line for sure.

"Tali" on its own sounds fine. "Tali'Zorah" sounds a bit too Mass Effect-ish to me though. I don't see anything wrong with using a name from a game unless it's "Dovahkiin" or something like that.

There is a kid out there called Dovahki'in. Their parents chose the name in order to win a contest (prize was a lifetime's supply of free Bethesda games).

Naming anyone after a fictional character seems rather weird to me but I'm with the opinion that Tali on its own is OK, it's unusual but doesn't sound ridiculous like some names I've heard. I also share the opinion that Tali'Zorah pushes it into ridiculous for a real person's name.

Just watch out for their boy - check whether the name is all capitals or not if he's Tim...

I was named after the leader of the Hunnic Empire, so I guess Mordin is not that bad.

Samara is already a real life name.

I agree that "Liara" is a nice sounding name in spite of my dislike for the character though.

I was thinking of that when I mentioned it. I think names like "Ashley", "Miranda", "Tali" etc are fine but not  "Tali'Zorah" or "Dovahkiin" which to me give off a "It's from Mass Effect" or a "It's from Skyrim" feeling.

I have no problem with it. People source their names from all over the place, and I loved having a unique name as a child. I knew 4 Ashleys, 3 Samanthas, 5 Megan/Meghans, etc... It seemed stupid to me that people choose the same boring names over and over. If the kid hates their name, they can legally change it as an adult and re-invent themselves like a friend of mine did.

Hence why I would choose it.

I'm also not a big fan of Liara, but I like the name.

If I were to name a child after any BioWare character though, it would be Leliana.
