Ultimately, the guys can determine what they want to name their daughter. And from what he wrote, it's because his wife fell in love with the name itself, not because they liked the character of Tali'Zorah so much. I mean, it is a beautiful sounding name.
That being said, even though I love the Mass Effect story a lot, the idea of "naming your kid after a story" sounds wrong on a basic level. It's just a story. It should not be given the right to intrude into another person's life that much. If grown people pay attention to a story so much that their whole life revolves around it, it feels similarly wrong. And here, the parents are making a somewhat related choice for someone who is not them.

Naming your kid after a story is how MOST common names orginated! Whether it was literary, myth, religious texts.
All of those (even religious ones, to those not following the religion) boil down to 'just a story'.

First names are more typically from stories. Last names (especially English related) often originate from old places in life, like 'Smith' or 'Shoemaker', etc.

They're just names. We make them up. We adopt them. We adjust them. We change them to fit cultures we wish to integrate better into.

If anything, naming your kid after a story you love, is at least more emotionally connecting than naming them after a random friggin flower (Rose) or month (April).

I'd suggest Tali as first name and Zora as middle name to be safe, but really, she'll just be known as Tali to friends anyway. And later on, she can just change it. Kids care about names less and less, and we shouldn't be defending bully positions anyway.

Nay. Naming your pets after video game (or fictional) characters is a plus, though. And some names obviously aren't exclusive to gaming (ex. people keep mentioning 'Tali', I met a client several months ago who was over the age of 30 and her first name was 'Tali', alas she knew nothing of Mass Effect). Of course, I'll never name anything 'Liara' now, but oh well.

My preference is to name children after close family.

-I don't know my father at all
-I don't have connection to my mother anymore, as she suffers from schizophrenia
-My first name mostly comes from a play, even though it has other connections by now
-My last name is from my mother's previous bf, so I don't even need it and could change it at any time
-My closer family's name isn't really appealing to me and doesn't have much social glue connected to it

I'm one of those examples where naming children after close family is at least not very high on my priority. If anything, I'd either go with suggestions from my partner at the time, or go ahead and name the child whatever I want. When it comes to Mass Effect, most names are in fact pretty appealing to me.

Male:
-Garrus
-Thane
-Zaeed
-etc (I especially like Thane though, honestly)

Female:
-Liara
-Tali, Tali'Zorah
-Benezia
-Samara (this one is in fact used and has some spiritual origin)
-etc

I won't go for most of them, but if I heard that someone had the name, I wouldn't care. Considering where names, even ones we now consider 'common' come from, it. does. not. matter. Tons of weird/silly (when you think about them) names that we don't bat an eye to because they're common. lol

It depends on the name, but I don't mind. As was mentioned before, Tali by itself makes for a pretty name. Once you start getting into the Sci-Fi Gibberish-y ones like Qwib-Qwib and such, my support tends to wane. Urdnot doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Samara, Morinth, and Aria would work quite well.

Not sure why it's that controversial. People have been getting wacky names since(and long before) Moon Unit.

Funny, I've actually met a girl named Tali before and she was born decades before ME was released.

i don't see a problem with it. I mean what is wrong with having an unconventional name? and besides like some people have said most names in mass effect were names way before ME, and like others have said ALL names today were made up at one point in time. so what if you get the name from a video game?

and in my experience its the conventional names that get people in trouble. when I was in high school I had three different boys in my class all with the same name. so the choice of being called by their first name was taken away from them, they were usually addressed by their last name.
so having a conventional name can be a bad thing whenever you think you are one of many instead of one of a kind. of course this isn't the case but when youre a kid youre very impressionable.

as for being bullied: as long as the name isn't so convoluted you cant pronounce it I don't think it really matters. I have known people with unusual names and if they were bullied it generally wasn't because of their name. ...and I condemn bullying in any way shape of form anyway

Nothing wrong with having/giving an unconventional name to a child... besides how the name could be taken. Not necessarily bullying or mockery, but more...

If someone named their kid Roadblock, Tractor, Cleaner or Vespa... even if they were very sincere about giving their kid that name and thought long and hard about it... Wouldn't a lot of people go and think or say: What the heck were you thinking?

If the kid likes the name, okay good. But having to introduce yourself as 'Roadblock Stevens' and having to answer questions about it every time 'Did your parents smoke weed or something?'... Why put that on your kid, if a nickname works just as well?

Now, with names like Samara or Tali'Zorah (with that being her full first name), it doesn't sound like you took the name of a vehicle or term and most of the names from Mass Effect sound cool, cute or original enough that few people will bat an eye at it.

It's only when the name gets confused with 'an unique name for the sake of being original' or 'naming your white kid Shaniqua' (though this is reverse-racist in a way) or making it seem like you care more about being able to say 'I command you my son, Geth' than whether the name fits your kid and he'll identify with it... That's not fair or objective, but it is the usual people's reaction.

And since it's sometimes hard to say where quirky names end and ridiculously identity-screwing names begin, there's no real answer when you're near the line between those.

Ashley, James, Jeff, David, Jakob, Miranda, Kasumi - standard
Liara, Tali, Samara, Kaidan, Garrus, Jack (for girl), Thane - bit strange but nice
Mordin, Zaeed, Saren - strange but OK
Wrex, Grunt, Legacy(joke), Morinth - akward
Harbinger ? Sovereign ? Niftu Cal ? - yhhhhhhhh
Comander ? - GOD PLEASE NO !

whats your name - Comander Shepard
and your first name ? - Comander

Besides I could totaly name my child Tali or Garrus or Thane ir Liara. They sound nice in English, so they would not even stand out that much.

Naming after stories or other figures isn't something new. In fact, I am willing to bet that your name is probably named after someone else, whether your parents intended or not. But if I have my own children I most likely name them after something more 'recent'.

Also I'd like to add that I have met/heard people named (or at least very similar) Tali and Talia.

Comander ? - GOD PLEASE NO !

Also, probably illegal in many places.

At the end of the day, the problem is that names are sorta permanent - e.g. if you don't like the latest game in the ME franchise and become disillusioned with Bioware as a result, you child will still be stuck with the name.

If you wouldn't want your child to be named after character from a game you were playing one or two decades ago (e.g. Khalid) then don't name them after ME characters either.

Yeah, sure, why not.

I'd prefer to use names from Tolkien. There are a great many to choose from.

Call your son Morgoth and your daughter Ungoliant. /k

Though I don't want kids anytime soon I might throw around Zaeed just to see how my girl reacts.

Just thinking about it is making me want to nickname the kid "lol badass"lol

I don't see anything wrong it if you like the name and it isn't too far out there. If you're naming your kid something just because you like the character, I think that's a bit wrong. But if you like the way the name sounds out of context then I see no reason why not as long as it sounds normal enough to be used in day to day life.

I wouldn't go around naming my kids Garrus and Thane because they just aren't normal sounding names and I associate them way to much with the character. Something like Miranda or Tali I might consider though because I think they are nice sounding names outside the context of the characters.

Other than Wrex and Grunt, which are more appropriate to pets, I don't really see any of the ME names as so otherworldly as to be out of place.

I named my baby parrot after a character in a game. But since the name itself is so common I don't think anyone could see the connection.
