... The thing about the current trend in gaming though is they're finally getting around it by way of DLC. None of the pirates will have access to any of it most of the time since one you need an account to download it and from what I understand it checks if your game is a valid copy before it installs with most of the recent DLC in games. Many pirates will buy the game eventually as they wish to have access to it.

This is a common misconception (and one that was even touted by EA itself). DLC for computers can be and is pirated as well as the original games. There isn't a real pancea for stopping piracy. Most of the people who care, will purchase the game, and support the company that produces it in this way. There may be naive pirates out there that do not know how they affect the companies that they pirate from so a little education can go a long way. To the malicious ones, there really is very little that can be done, fortunately, those are in the minority. The vast majority of piracy problems exist is countries where there is a market for pirated merchandise and that is the much larger threat to companies.
I have to admit that I have, at times, DLed a game to give it a go on my system to see if it will run or if it even my cup of tea. Less so with Steam (because it offers "free weekend" deals which allow me to try before I by). However, I do delete said game if I don't intend to play it, and I do purchase it if I do.
