I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday.

 

Honestly, I didn't like it all that much. It was an all right movie overall, but I don't think it lived up to the massive over the top hype I've been seeing for it.

Legit movie plot discussion and spoilers to follow:

I really enjoyed how the men in the movie weren't the key to everything like they normally are in Disney movies. That was a great message to see shown by the movie. Instead of relying on the guys, the princesses were able to take care of a lot themselves and used their own strengths/wits to solve their issues.

 

I didn't much like how true love is still shoved down the audience's throat, how stupid some of the characters were sometimes, the sudden good to evil switch the first prince guy does (he went from 0 to Satan in 3 seconds flat which I think was overkill...), and a bunch of minor things like the overabundance of musicals and the stupid way the parents died.

 

The HUGE amount of plot magic was also annoying too:

>fall around 100 feet, but survive because of landing in snow... but then able to walk around on said snow despite it being 20ft deep of loose powder... wat?

>"I don't know how to control my powers! Oh, wait, true love!" *instant control over every aspect*

>Killer Frost was locked in a dungeon for ages trying not to use her powers at all, but suddenly after escaping to the wilderness has the ability to on the spot make gigantic palaces, sentient beings (which she went from being surprised about being able to make to making a gigantic monster in like 5 seconds)

>Ice makes everything brittle in the movie, like the bonds which Killer Frost (can't remember her name, so I'm going to refer to her as this) is chained with, but when the red-head freezes solid it blocks a sword..? Even after the gigantic monster's legs were easily cut off by a sword earlier..?

 

I also found it interesting that in a world where trolls (more or less sentient rocks) are seemingly known to exist, the idea of a person with ice powers is seen as taboo.

 

As I was saying before, the movie wasn't bad. I may have a lot of minor problems with it, but overall it was enjoyable. I just don't see it living up to the massive hype by any means. Perhaps this is in part due to the fact I'm not a child, nor a girl, but it just doesn't seem like super A+ "gotta see it or you're missing out" material.

Fair play, Though I'll agree that criticising things such as the films concept of physics is a little nonsensical given what else the film's about.

I have a feeling you were taking my list of minor plot magics as my only criticisms. They were just meant to support my overall feeling that there was a lot of plot magic going on. I had other criticisms too, such as

the over the top evil suddenly displayed by that prince guy. Honestly, that seemed/felt so forced.

Not to say I want to get into some debate over whether the movie was great or not. If you like it, that's great for you and I'm happy for you. I merely wanted to post in this thread that I don't quite understand this movies insane popularity, especially after having watched it. At least I now know what all these random "Do you want to build a snowman?" quotes are referencing though...

Since this is a topic I'd already mentioned before in Second-Cousin-Twice-Removed Show MLP, I won't go too far in the subject, but it depends on the universe you're working with. Take musical numbers, for example. Frozen is chock-full of them, and they're essentially stretching reality for the sake of entertainment. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does come at a cost of realism/immersion, so some people are going to be put off by this.

As far as "shoving love down their throat", that was the main theme they were going for and it's meant as the "missing "ingredient" that kept her from controlling herself. I'm guessing their intent was that the Ice Powers were emotionally charged. Fear causes chaotic Ice abilities, Love's a bit more controlled. I'd have preferred a bit more explanation of how people are born with that sort of thing, though.

Some of the issues as mentioned in the Spoiler Box of Doom Above weren't really related to the realism of the universe, but were narratively below expectations of what they could have been.

That's a good question. My personal theory would be that Elsa's Ice effects somehow had a brittling effect on the chains, most of everything else she conjured seemed to be rock solid. Since Anna is cursed with a frozen heart, I'm not sure it's going to have the same outcome. Elsa's powers tend to be destructive or otherwise chaotic when she's fearful, so it's not necessarily against Frozen's logic.

I'm not here to boo-hoo the movie or anything. I got my money's worth and have watched it several times. But I personally believe not everything can get a wave of acceptance whether or not it's an animated fictional universe. It really does depend on what the authors have created. One of the more popular mantras is that cartooniness can be okay in a storyline as long as it follows the rules it plays by and stays continuous.

I thought it was as good a time as any and pointed out to the family that it was now the 10th highest grossing film too, meaning it had surpassed both Hobbit films.

 

The response?

 

'Hmmm, yes, but you won't see many children going to watch The Hobbit, will you?'

 

There was much smirking and eyebrow raising.

Y'know, I complained about all the hate Hans used to get, but lets not overdo it folks. The guy did try to ice most of the cast, remember? 

 

I kind of have to ask now, who here actually likes Hans, even with his douchebaggery?

 

I'm actually quite fond of him despite it. The fandom's made some pretty interesting headcannon fuel for why he is the way he is, so maybe that's why I still like him.
