As for his own motivation, who knows? You could always headcannon in what a lot of the fanbase seems to be with stuff like the above, suggesting his family have belittled and degraded him for not being in line to his own throne.

I'll admit that I've fallen foul of this. I have no resistance to such things.
He knows how to rock sideburns though, and I'll always respect him for that.
