I had the same problem, as I always aim for two tomes and a backpack and always fall a bit short. With a human noble background I always managed a tome and a backpack (30 gold total) quite comfortably, but then I've never tried to press for the absolute maximum in money so far. Two tomes may just be doable with stuff like the Blood Dragon armour.
Some general advice is in the wiki article on
The Spellward, specifically in the Exploits section (on how to be able to afford the Spellward when arriving at the camp).
Some specifics not mentioned there (typing from memory, so caveat emptor):
Generally, always press for a reward (Kennel Master in Ostagar,
Ser Bryant and
Ser Donall in the Lothering Chantry, Bodahn when exiting Lothering), or work for people who can give a reward (e.g. the unscrupulous merchant).
In Ostagar, brow-beat the
hapless little Elf messenger into giving you Ser Garlen's sword before you pick up Alistair.
If you want to loot the
mage's chest (instead of leaving it for Return to Ostagar, for the Corrupted Magister's Staff): if you can't persuade the guard then you either have to grossly over-pay him for the food, or kill the prisoner. Hence better to do this before picking up Alistair.
Pick up Alistair right after those two dark side acts. That way he will partake in any XP that you get from that point on. Rogues in particular should defer any lockpicking until after they fetched Alistair. Don't forget to pick up Ser Jory and Daveth before reporting back to Duncan or you'll lose XP.
Don't forget to buy your first backpack before reporting to Duncan.
If you don't have lock-picking skills: Daveth is a rogue and he can open many of the chests in Ostagar for loot and XP once you are tasked with the
Tainted Blood mission.
Read up on the
Korcari Wilds in the wiki if it's been a while since your last time, so that you don't forget any of the optional stuff. Opening Jetta's box should net you half sovereign or so.
Give better armour and weapons to Ser Jory and Daveth. Failing that, give them *other* equipment. Failing that, convince them to swap armour and weapons before the Joining. Trust me.
Before reporting back to Duncan, bring the wilds flower to the kennel master (human nobles get a reward) and check with the quarter master for your second backpack (forgot when it shows up - before or after the Joining).
In the
Tower of Ishal mission: give good equipment to your temporary companions. This minimises the chance that potions will have to be consumed. In general, if you have to consume potions in the Wilds or in the Tower then you're using the wrong tactics, excepting Gazarath and the ogre.
After slaying the ogre but before activating the beacon, give civilian clothes (or cheap armour) to all of the temps and remove all of their equipment. That should improve their chances of getting away unscathed, and anyway that hapless mage has stolen so much equipment from me in past lives that it is only just to turn the tables for once.
Alistair should have one level-up with a skill point (level 6?) around that time. Make sure that he takes the first level of trap making if your character doesn't have it already (
Traps are a Girl's Best Friend).
Bandit encounter upon entering Lothering: order the bandits to hand over the stolen goods before you kill them. That should net you one gold thirty extra.
Let
Barkspawn look for interesting things. Besides the usual special items (the magic staff called Piece of Wood, the pantaloons and so on) he can also fetch minor loot. The magic staff should be better than Morrigan's, so you can sell one of the staves if money is tight.
In Lothering you can switch companions in and out of the party. Do so as appropriate for the things that you're about to do, to avoid having to spend time and money on regaining lost approval. Conversely, companions who approve of you are better at their jobs.
When picking up Leliana, opt for killing the opposition and use a reliable strategy to keep her from stealing kills. Besides upping your XP and kill count, this also gives you a chance at more loot.
In the doomsayer incident before the chantry you can extort about half a sovereign from a frightened bystander.
Don't give any money to the revered mother in the chantry. Leliana can pick the lock on Sten's cage, so the only reason to visit the revered mother is to intimidate her for Morrigan's amusement.
Don't start brewing poison for
Barlin until you have hoovered up every last enemy and every last bit of loot in Lothering. The darkspawn at the exit in particular may drop venom. Similar arguments apply to all 'procure-X-number-of-Y' quests.
If you are short on lesser health packs for
Elder Miriam and accidentally sold the empty flasks, don't give her higher-grade packs and don't buy flasks for making lesser packs. Lesser packs cost exactly the same as empty flasks, so buying lesser packs instead means that you're one elfroot ahead on each pack.
Once you have done all quests in Lothering - but not before - let Leliana exercise her pick-pocketing skills.
If you are one or two gold short of the mark upon arrival in camp: some gifts turn into real items when they are given to the right companions, and they fetch quite a bit of silver. There is the Butterfly Sword for Sten, for example, and the Protective Cone for Barkspawn. There may be more.
Also, I haven't checked the
promotional DLC stuff for things that may show up at creation, like the Blood Dragon armour does. May be worth a look.
