Then he declares himself regent right after the king has died at the hands of the monsters he fled from, leaving him and his men conveniently without a scratch. Again, right after leaving the southern border wide open (indicating they're not a threat) and then telling people they were too powerful to defeat (indicating you're lying). Yeah, people won't think you're lying about the danger to take leadership and trying to scare them into rallying behind you at all.

Loghian doesn't make himself the Regent. Queen Anora makes him the Regent.

Are you sure? Its been some time since I last played origins but I dont remember anyone saying that Anora made him the regent. People kept saying how Loghain declared himself the regent.

I checked dragon age wiki and wikipedia and they said the same. That he declared himself the regent.

Well, if the Dragon Age Wiki says he declared himself regent, i supose you have to go with that. What I base it on is the rumors you get when you first you get to Lothering. They mention the death of Cailan, the Grand Cleric held a full day of mourning and the procession was over a mile long, and Queen Anora has named her father the Regent. It seemed a credible rumor to me, because Loghain would want political cover for the actions he took. Doing the things he did later would be a lot easier if he was politically appointed by his daughter, rather than taking power on his own. i would appreciate a link to where it says he took power on his own, because it directly contradicts the stated rumor in the game.

I think Teagan states in the Landsmeet shortly after Ostagar that Loghain declared himself Anora's regent. And while I'm not sure Teagan's the best source given his bias against Loghain, nobody corrects him on this. (If he needed correcting, you'd think Loghain and Anora would provide some.)

I don't imagine Teagan was in Denerim at the time Queen Anora named her father the Regent, and you can tell in the first cutscene Loghain was feeling his oats. It'd be a understandable mistake for Teagan to make. As for not correcting him, Teagan makes it clear he's going to be a political enemy of Anora and Loghain.

Dragon age wiki about Loghain: "After the battle at Ostagar, he declares the Grey Wardens traitors and places a bounty on their heads. He also declares himself regent for his daughter Anora. This is not met with approval from the Bannorn, and civil war ensues."

Codex about Loghain: "He then returned to Denerim and declared himself the regent to his daughter, Queen Anora, demanding that Ferelden follow him against the darkspawn--upsetting a great many of the banns."

Wikipedia about Loghain: " Loghain takes up residence in Denerim and appoints himself his daughter's regent and becomes the de facto ruler of Ferelden. He uses the Grey Wardens as a scapegoat, blaming his traitorous actions at Ostagar on the Wardens and demands Ferelden's nobility submit to his rule; an action that instigates a civil war between his forces and those of Ferelden's nobility, who either disbelieve his version of events at Ostagar, or resent Loghain, as a man of common birth, taking the throne."

@Jedi If I were to not point out that you just cited wikipedia as an authority on something, I think my school would preemptively declare every course I'm planning to take this semester failed. Also, that article massively oversimplifies the plot of the game. (In that it contains no reference to the ambiguity we're debating here.)

@Mike Yes, but Anora's trying to make him not an enemy. She does a poor job of it, and while I'm inclined to go with the Codex on Anora's competence I see the argument that she doesn't show any, but the fact remains that Anora considers him a potential ally.

He did declare himself Regent, but Anora did not take issue with it. Realistically from a political standpoint, it would've been unwise for her to do so, but she was effectively saying "Yes, he is the Regent, Bannorn. Deal with it, shut up, and don't fight a civil war PLEASE."

The banns ended up doing just that, sadly.

To the great surprise of no one. We are, sadly, talking about a group of nobles who have a reputation for going to war with each other over trees.

EDIT: Wow, I'm a necromancer. I only came to this thread to find a source for another one on Ostagar, and got caught up reading it even though it's nearly two years old.

We can't know for sure because the player doesn't actually know what was the status of the battle at the moment the beacon was lit. We are blind to what truly happened at Ostagar.

You either believe Loghain's assessment of imminent defeat was right or you believe there was a chance for victory and for Cailan to be saved.

Depending on which you choose to believe, a man is a traitor while the other is a martyr or a man is a wise general while the other is a fool.
