But apparantly that wasn't artistic enough or something, and I ended up being the guy who directed Shepard to shoot things while someone else finished the story for me.

At least he was in ME2. Not sure about ME3. Seems a little Tom Cruise-y.

Funny, I love both actors. Tom may be crazy(not as crazy as Mel Gibson or John Travolta) but he's still a great actor^_^

Shepard is a character. A character I play as. He was never "my" character, and he was never a projection of me. He was his own character. One whose decisions I could make and personality I could influence.
That is how I viewed Shepard as well.
Personally I never quite understood the whole 'self-insert' thing with RPGs. I don't think I've ever played an RPG where I viewed the protagonist as being me in that world. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of role playing? I personally wouldn't want a RPG protagonist to be limited to doing what I would or wouldn't do in his or her boots, shoes, or sandals. That would be like playing the same character in every single game.
For me an RPG protagonist is more like a character in a book or a film, except you've got some limited authorial control over the character's choices and ultimate fate. The decisions they make are based on their backstories or world views, and not necessarily on what I would do in that character's place.

Obviously, I like when I can control Shepard into doing/saying things that are in-line with my ideal type of hero. I do not like when the options I'm given for doing/saying things all fail to meet my ideal or anything close to it. I am okay with Shepard being scrippted to do/say things that are necessary to moving the story along or are neutral in nature ("neutral" like [sitting on a chair] or saying "Let's go" that are not a big deal). I hate when Shepard is scripted to do/say stupid or base things.
Without headcanon to fix the problems mentioned above, I find Shepard's character pretty mediocre overall.

It's funny how much headcanon I employ just to rationalize some things. I don't remember doing this so much in other RPGs. It must be the limitations of a voiced protagonist. Kind of love/hate it.

Not at all. The purpose of role-playing is to play a role. WIth role-playing you can explore different aspects of yourself. You can play your character as braver, or smarter, or more cruel than you really are. I certainly have no ilusions that I will ever be Commander Shepard. But I could imagine how I might react in that situation given certain details and personality traits. Granted I can't really play expressly evil characters, but that should still leave plenty of room to try out new Shepards.

That's the route of an action character. I don't want to play Ezio Auditore, or Alan Wake.

That's a shame. I was able to "relate" to all three of my Shepards of varying alignments within the confines of what BioWare wrote, just like the previous two games.
